You beat me to it. I was just going to post it up. Interesting... Just got myself a cool Sanyo super-slim silver phone from Sprint, but I'd probably chuck it for a cool iPhone with bluetooth. The article's right though... dangerous territory...

There was a whole series of discussion about this.... and my personal contribution is strangely like the NYTimes story...
Yep - I'd get one - if it was a phone and if it had the following spec....
GSM phone
Ink
Bluetooth with Rendezvous discovery
MP3
iChat
That would get rid of three bulges in my jacket (Phone, Palm, iPod)
Imagine walking into a cafe - checking your mail over a bluetooth (or WiFi perhaps) network rendezvous has discovered - using iMode or similar, getting iChat going and chatting online using ink input as you sip a latte.
Then walking out listening to an MP3 which is interupted when a phone call comes in, you use the phone hands free using a head set.
You could probably do it in a form factor not much bigger than an iPod.... probably only the screen needs to be enlarged... you could dial using the.... ummm dial....
And make sure you can use it with one hand - ever tried to use a Palm on the train?
You'd only need two radios - GSM and the Bluetooth and many phones have this now - perhaps WiFi would be better - then you could stream MP3s to and from your iPad from your or your friend's computer without a FIrewire cable anywhere in the house.
Apple should do this - phones have 70% or more penetration in most non US markets. Add to that GPS - soon to be a US requirements - and wow.
Apple...... Build a Phone - a phone that's a PDA not the other way around - the Treo - yuk.
