I have a Laserwriter Pro 600 and it worked great under all version of 10.1. But it stopped working when I updated to 10.2 and I have run out of ideas on how to make it work. I am using an Asantetalk bridge on ethernet connected to a Netgear router. Has anybody been able to make this configuration work or is their something that I should try before I go out and blow a bunch of money on a new printer.

I have a LaserWriter NTR connected to a MacSense router via a Farallon iPrint EtherMac adapter, and I can connect and print to it fine. The default config with Print Center seems to be Rendevous and directory services (or somesuch). From the pull down menus, I chose AppleTalk; my NTR was recognized, and all is well.

Actually I got it to work....Finally. But I think Apple's support for Appletalk will go by the wayside next year and I will probably be forced into buying a new printer.

I have spent the last week dealing with this exact problem. I have a Quicksilver G4 with a Laserwriter Select 360 connected through an AsanteTalk. Worked perfect under 10.1.5 (albeit slow). With 10.2, nothing. I have tried everything. Powering up in diferent orders, updated my NIC card drivers, tried the built in ethernet. Nothing. I tried it on an iMac and still didn't get a response so I figured it was OS 10.2. You two really got it to work? Please tell me your secret! I figured the AsanteTalk would fetch a tidy fee on ebay and I'd get myself a cheap new laser printer. I have only done minimal research, but it appears laser printers with postscript are not exactly cheap.
So, if you can explain how you solved the missing appletalk printer, that would be huge. if you have any advice on a replacement, that would be swell too.

Go to System Preferences and Network. Make sure that Appletalk is turned on. When I loaded 10.2 it turned Appletalk off. Once it was configured everything work......more or less. I figure sometime next year I will probably be forced into buying a new printer. And if you are wondering why, its because Apple will probably dump Appletalk.

I have had AppleTalk on the whole time. I am hoping it is something simple, yet obscure, like a preference file to delete, or some other apple trademark. I know about appletalks impending demise. Really, with a 1000BT ethernet, isn't it kind of silly to keep the LW S 360 plodding along through its serial cable?
thanks

Give Asante a call. There is a toll free number and they will be very helpful.

Well, I emailed back and forth with asante about possible answers to the problem. They were quite helpful, but nothing seemed to work, so I finally called. Here is the final answer. After a few more questions that did not provide anything, the Asante tech said that Apple screwed with the networking in 10.2 and that it was their fault. He did not say if Asante was working on a fix. He suggested calling Apple, although he did not say if they could do anything about it. The printer does work, so I guess I'll use the last of the toner through System 9 and then sell the AsanteTalk on Ebay and take the printer out back and shoot it. Sad. We shared some good times, me and that printer...

You can pick up an HP Laserwriter 1200 for about $400. And it is postscript and definitely faster than your 360.

Thats about what I'm looking for. Just wondering. The HP page says the 1200 emulates Postscript level 2. What exactly does that mean?
Thanks for the info. I think I'll be holding a yard sale...

Most decent laser printers have postscript emulators built in. Postscript is produced by Adobe and the manufactures build the interpreters into their printers. Unless you need some extreme graphics handling then Postscript 2 will do just nicely for you. In the HP products you will find level 3 in their more expensive printers starting with the laserjet 4100.

Very cool. I'll keep that in mind. Until I deplete the $90 toner cart in my Select 360, here is what I'm doing: I've installed 10.1.5 on a separate internal drive. When I need to print with the laserprinter, I restart from that drive. Convoluted? Yes. But the 10.2 startup is about 30 seconds when AppleTalk is turned off. With it on, it was about a minute and a half. So I'm willing to deal with this for the time being.
Thanks again.

I came across your post looking for a way to solve the problem of not being able to print Encapsulated Post Script files (graphics). I have a HP 1200 and HP says it won't/can't print EPS's becuse of the USB connect. That the fix is to shell out $200 for their print server. Text prints fine but EPS graphics such as clip art just don't work. Anyone with a cure?

I find it hard to swallow that you need an ethernet print server to print encapsulated postscript files. The reason I say that is that the print server HP is referring to (I assume it's the Jetdirect 175X) is ethernet to USB. Is it the 175X?

My laserwriter II no longer works in 10.2. It worked fine in 10.1. I hear that Apple dropped postscript 1 support in 10.2 - is this true? It would explain the sudden non working of my printer.
It does still print in classic within 10.2
Looks like I'll have to retire this printer...
