can i use my non-miniDV sony camcorder with imovie if i run the camera into my computer via laser link? has anyone tried this? does anyone know?

i don't exactly know what you mean by laser link, but i.link is equivalent to ieee1394 aka firewire, so this should work. any other connection would be too slow.

I don't know all the facts about Sony's laserlink, but I know that its nothing like firewire. Its a wireless connection method for playing camcorder tapes on a tv. You might check on Sony's site to see if it works with non-Sony devices. It might be possible.... Sorry that I can't help more....

You're confusing i.Link and LaserLink, which are completely different things. LaserLink is an infrared video signal, you buy a small receiver that goes on the TV, so you can watch your videos without plugging in wires. i.Link is just Sony's name for FireWire. If your camera is a Digital8, it will work with iMovie. If it's 8mm, Hi8, VHS, etc., then you'll need an analog-to-digital video converter such as Sony's Digital Media Converter, Formac's Studio DV, Dazzle's Hollywood DV Bridge, or Miglia's Director's Cut.
