So I'm closing in on buying an ipod. My two choices are:
1) 5gig model with a couple accessories
2) 10gig model with no accessories
I have about 4.5 gigs of songs right now, so i think the 5 gig would be ok. Anything else I should know
What are the changes between the old 5gig and the new 5gig...and of course the old 10gig and the new 10gig. The only difference I can see is the new jog dial, the firewire cover, and the remote on the 10 gig. Am I missing anything here?

if you buy the 10GB model, you can always pick up the accessories later. but if you buy the 5GB model, you can't magically buy 5 more GB of storage.
from what i remember from the webcast, the new 5GB model has the firewire port cover, but it still comes with the old wheel, not a circular trackpad.

Ah. Good info. What is the difference between the old wheel and the new one?

Hi,
I don't there the 5 GB has changed at all besides the updated iPod software. The new 10 GB and 20 GB models have the firewire cover, a clip-on case, solid-state wheel (doesn't move - just like a trackpad, but round), and is thinner than all previous and current models by a bit. Only the 10 and 20 GB models also have the remote. The old 10 GB is the same as the new 5 GB model - no accessories mentioned above, but has 10 GB of capacity.
In my opinion, 5 GB is fine, but the new 10 GB iPod with its thinness and solid-state wheel is really nice. I played with one at an Apple Store and loved the new "wheel." The good thing is that it won't break as the original wheel could after years of use. Good luck with your choice! All of them are keepers!

I've gotta chime in and say go with the 10GB. You'll appreciate the space as you acquire more music for your collection (or start using the iPod as a firewire hard drive). Like it was mentioned, you can't easily buy extra space...and the 10GB comes with some nice accessories...

I've had both. Gave the 5gd to my son and bought the 10gd last week. I really like the 10gd. Think about this, if you want to get a remote for your 5gd, you'll have to buy it with an extra set of ear buds. Price is $40. If you get the 10gd you get the remote and an extra 5gd for $100.
As for the wheel, the new one takes a little getting used too, but it is fine. Hope this helps with your decision.

Get the newer 10GB, the extra space is the way to go. Once you start using your iPod your going to start putting more on it.
