The other night my Maxtor 3000XT 160GB Firewire drive stopped working (this is under 10.1). When I powered up my PowerMac G4 I could see the lights of the drive turning on as usual. I would then get the message that the drive could not be mounted because the volume could not be recognized. I tried Disk Utility. The Maxtor was recognized and got the following message:

Verifying disk "Harmony"
Can't open /dev/risk1s9: Permission denied
Verify completed.

Seeing "Permission denied" made me think it was a problem relating to Mac OS X. I then ran Psuedo and dropped the Disk Utility app on it. Again the Maxtor was recognized and when I ran "Repair" I got the following message:

Repairing disk "Harmony".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Keys out of order
Repair completed.

Can anyone tell me what Keys out of order means? Is this something I can fix on my own?

I think the best thing to do it backup any data you can, reformat and reinstall the OS. If the problem is still there then call Maxtor.

Disk Utility doesn't like my Maxtor Firewire drive, either. Not to despair, though.

Disk Warrior will fix the "keys out of order" problem. No need to re-format if you can get your hands on a copy.
