IMHO, firewire, Oxford911 chipset, external power (let me clearify, as long as the converter is external) and must "look" fast

most of the heat is generated by that converter. so if the converter is outside, then there would be no need for a fan... quiet
I've heard that some 3.5 enclosures have poor ventilation (weak fans, bad designs) which can lead to heat problems (and ultimately drive failure I guess).
the majority of the heat seems to come from the power converter, so as long as the power connector is external, i don't think you'll have much problem with it.
So, any (specific?) reccomendations?
(BTW I'm specifically thinking about a Westerdn Digital 120GB/7200RPM drive I saw on newegg)
Any comments would be much appreciated.
I have the pre-fab WD external FW drive, the 120 gig, same exact one you're talking about. I love the drive, it's ffffffast. it's got the external power converter (lump in the middle of the power line). and no heat problem whatsoever. I use it to, um, "back up" er, "DVD's" plus 70 gigs of mp3's. So far i have had it less than a year, so i can't really comment on long-lasting issues. but it's been extremely reliable so far.
if i had to do it again, i'd probably buy an enclosure that i have described above and put in a 200 gig WD hdd.
Lastly, Todd, also on this board has info on external enclosures that comes with bridge that holds TWO hdd's. I think that's what i might go with next, u know, those DVD's can sure take up a lot of space.
