There were some threads about slide scanners in the upper range (1000$ and more) but i'd like to know if anyone has any experiences with one of those
Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II USB
Minolta Dimage Scan Elite II
Nikon Film Scanner CoolScan IV
they cost between ~400 and ~900$
their webpage doesn't mention OS X support, do they work nonetheless?

I can get that info for you. Personally I would recommend the Scan Elite II. The interface is really easy to use. I think that the Coolscan IV is over priced.
I'll get back to you.

I have the coolscan IV. Nikon has released a new osx update to their scanning software. It is a bit slow compared to the more expensive ones they sell (due to USB VS Firewire) but the image quality is better than anything you will find for under a grand.

I respectfully disagree with you because of one simple fact. The Coolscan IV has a dynamic range of 3.6, whereas the Scan Elite II has a dynamic range of 4.8. Translation: The Scan Elite II will be able to pick up detail in shadow and highlight areas better than the Coolscan IV.
Anyway, still waiting for the answer to the original question on the Minolta Scanners.

Nope, none of Minolta's scanners work in OS X yet.

This information is incorrect. The dynamic range of a scanner is a extremely inaccurate measurement and varies greatly among manufacturers.
If you check any of the photography sites, Canon and Nikon scanners are the only real contenders. Here are some resources:
http://www.imaging-resource.com
http://www.photo.net
http://www.robgalbraith.com
If you check the Nikon site, they do have drivers for OS X, but are reporting some problems.

Dynamic range is one of those "fuzzy" measurements used by scanner manufacturers. Don't believe the hype.
I have the Minolta Multi Pro. Minolta has no OS X s/w yet, though a rep told me recently that they were aiming for an "end of summer" release. Funny thing to say in the last week of Aug...
Personally, I use VueScan. Works very well.
