I just got a new iPod today (replacement after my other one got busted) and I'm trying to load 1.1 on it but can't do it. It came with 1.2 pre-installed, so a factory restore just gives me 1.2.
I have a 1.1 updater and I tried using "restore" with it and the new iPod, but it wouldn't work. When I plugged the iPod back in, I got a funky folder icon on the screen.
So I used the 1.2 updater software to restore everything, and now I'm back to 1.2. Is there *any* way I can get 1.1 on this iPod? It's apparently not going to let me use the 1.1 updater to "downgrade". Is there any way of completely wiping out the HD on it and installing 1.1? I tried a reset (play and menu buttons) and also deleting all the files off the iPod manually, including all the invisible ones (that was a mess!)
Is there some sort of software out there that will reformat the iPod for me? Any advice is greatly appreciated- I prefer 1.1 and there are some features on it I need for my specific situation. Thanks!

use tinker tool or somthing that will allow you to compleatly see and remove all of the contents of the ipod, compleatly reformat the disk, and then use the restore, button on the 1.1 software, that would be my only guess.

Just did it.
Open Disk Utility
Plug in your iPod
Select "4.66( ymmv ) GB Apple" (not the one that says iPod, under it) drive and erase the disk
When you unplug the 'Pod, you'll get a flashing folder on it's display
Plug back in - Run the 1.1 updater, mine is back on 1.1 and staying there. The clock was cool, but not at the cost to battery life.

If you read my first post, I noted iPod is brand new- came with 1.2. The firmware will NOT accept the 1.1 restore or update. It never haad 1.1 on it and won't restore to it. I need a way to reset the firmware, if possible.

I didn't run a "restore".
My 'Pod came with 1.0 on it. I'ts an "original" 5 GB.
I updated to 1.2 when it came out and was happy with the clock and other new features, until I saw my battery life go south.
It's not impossible that your iPod won't "take" the 1.1 firmware, but I'd be surprised if that's the case.
Erase the drive, not just the iPod partition and try to apply the 1.1 update again.

Like I said in my original post, my iPod is brand new (got it yesterday) and came with 1.2 on it, along with the latest firmware. It won't allow me to reinstall anything earlier than 1.2 on it.
Yours is a much earlier iPod and came with earlier software (1.0), therefore, you can upgrade and downgrade as much as you want between 1.0 and 1.2. You are able to run the upgrade because you started out with 1.1. The iPod I had before this could also be upgraded and downgraded.
Unless you have a new iPod, you can't know what I am talking about. It's a firmware issue. Thanks anyway.
