The long rumoured Sony DRU500A DVD burner has been announced. The external version is the DRX500UL, which supports both USB 2.0 and Firewire/iLink.

It does 2X DVD-RW, 2.4X +RW, 4X DVD-R, 2.4X +R. Also burns to CD-R/W. No DVD-RAM however unfortunately.

Any idea if the internal version of this new Sony 4X DVD-R burner would be recognized by iDVD?

It won't be, unless Apple specifically decides to support it, which is unlikely (unless Apple switches to this as its primary "SuperDrive").

I don't think they'd switch to a drive like that, because of:
1) Cost - it's gonna debut at a significantly higher price than the Pioneer which does 2X. 4X is moot for now since the media doesn't exist yet, and when it appears it's gonna be $$$$.
2) Complexity - it makes little sense to complicate matters with both +R and DVD-R formats, since both essentially do the same thing. Indeed, Apple won't even acknowledge the DVD-RW burning capability of the Superdrive, I presume partially because the n00bs would simply get confused, or would complain when their DVD-RW discs don't play in a set top player.
3) Cost

As for iDVD working or not, you may be right, but a few people have said that the Panasonic LF-D311 DVD-RAM/-R drive works fine with iDVD. I haven't tried it personally though.

If 4X blank DVDs are not yet widely available could this mean a delay in the appearance of the new Pioneer 4X DVD Superdrives in Apples?

Mitsui apparently has already agreed to make 4X media. Just don't expect to find it at your corner store.

By the way, Sony has already introduced Vaio laptops in Japan with DVD-R recording. Very cool. I suspect these are Pioneers. If they've got these already I suspect Pioneer 4X desktop drives are just RoundTheCorner(TM).

Well looks like the new Sony is the true Superdrive. I'll get one as soon as they increase the DVD+RW speeds to 4x
