Hello,
Camelot, and Cipher13 a while ago recommended Seagate Barracuda drive (w 2 MB Buffer) over Wester Digital Caviar w 8MB buffer.
this would be for a second HD in a new G4. they are similarly priced ( barracuda 5$ more) is there a concensus that seagate is the better drive, or pros and cons to each?
thanks rotut

it's a simple matter of speed vs. quietness. The Baracuda is quiet but not as fast as the WD. I try to squeeze every oz of speed out of my Mac, so I'm all for WD...

I actually run both an 80 gig Seagate Baracuda and a 120 gig WD (with the original Apple 30 gig). The previous post concerning noise is accurate. I will say that I copied my system over from the Seagate to the WD using cardbon copy clone and benchmarked the difference. Much quicker with the 8 meg cache on the Seagate. The system is much "snappier" booting from the WD.
Just my 2 cents.

I vote for the WD 120GB (8MB cache) here.

I just put a WD 120 GB with 8 MB buffer in a FireWire case from Other World Computing and it rocks! The speed is just amazing, and I don't find it to be all that loud (other than when it is spinning up or down).
The WD with 8 MB buffer gets my vote!

OK so my 2c is old, but whatever.
My upgrade was also a WD after my OEM drive fried, and I am very happy with the WD and the slight boost in speed it gave me.

Same here. WD 120 in a Pyro case. Works like a charm. The fan in the case (soon to be disabled) is louder than the drive itself. I heard that these drives run cool and don't need the case fan. True? or am I asking for trouble with killing the fan?
