I fear we'll have to wait for iSync. I hope that iSync will take care of this problem. I don't know for certain.
Withtout iSync to synchronize iCal (and Address Book) with my Palm PDA and without the ability to import my calendar from Palm Desktop, iCal is useless (except as a snazzy date dockling ).

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Yeah, I'm also pretty miffed that iSync isn't quite ready yet. I'll use this opportunity to get familiar with iCal (I love it so far!) and get everything configured the way I'll like it. That way, I'll at least be all ready to go the minute iSync is released.
Oh well...

hsl: all indications seem to be that the Palm aspect of iSync will sit on top of the official Palm HotSync Software. So you should be able to use this mail conduit with iSync.

Not to get too off topic, but this mail conduit on version tracker, will it transfer my email from Mail to my Clie and then back again or is this something we still have to wait for?
As far as iCal goes, yeah, I dig it. However I have no use for it until I can HotSync it to my Clie. I will probably never use it until iSync gets here.

I'm not sure I understand you. Are you saying that the Calendar and Address Book in OS X will be ADDITIONAL databases on your Palm, so they won't replace the existing address book and calendar?
I'm using a first generation CLIE. I'm not expecting to be able to do much with it, between the missing sync and wanting to use Jaguar's programs...
Alex.

Where did this come from? I'd love to know more if this is true because this is the 1st time I've read this. I was kinda wishing that Apple would allow me to get rid of the Palm stuff. (including hot sync).

Dave
Info came from an article in MacUser UK. (Can't find my copy so I cannot let you know which issue it was, I'm afraid.)
The article was talking about the technological aspect of using iSync with a mobile phone over Bluetooth. It mentioned briefly that Palm syncing was, technologically, a lot easier for Apple as they would be using Palm's own HotSync technology and that any Palm that can currently sync on OS X would work with iSync.
I understand why you may wish to get rid of Palm Desktop (including HotSync) if you only use the Date Book, To Do and Address conduits, but what about the other standard conduits (Backup, Install, etc.), let alone third-party conduits. I think it's fairly safe to say that we'll be using the HotSync Manager for a while to come.
---
Alex
iSync has to use the standard Palm databases if it is to be any use.
What I was trying to say was that the information I've read suggests that Apple would be using the HotSync technology developed by Palm to access these databases.
There's a lot of supposition here (as we have so little information on the Palm aspects of iSync), but my best guess that iSync will provide a conduit (or conduits) which work with the HotSync Manager. The interesting part is whether we'll still use the hardware button on the cradle to initiate a sync or whether we'll be able to use the on-screen button.
---
I don't presume to be an authority on this. Just an interested palm owner. So if anyone knows more, I would love to be corrected!

sja777,
Color me corrected....
Since my last posting I have since come into some info that points to 'yes' iSync will require Palm's Sync software. Not a bad thing I guess but I was kinda wishing I didn't have to have to install the palm software.
Thanks for the info
Dave

Well....
I can safely say that iSync does in fact require the Palm Desktop software in order for HotSync to work with Palm OS devices.
You do _not_ seem to need the entire Palm Desktop package. You can get away with only installing HotSync Manager.
iSync installs its own conduit in the standard Palm conduits folder. Once you have configured the iSync conduit for what type of PDA you have, and how you want it to handle synchronizing your data, you are all set.
Once that conduit is setup, just press the Hotsync button on your Palm. It then fires up the normal Hotsync Manager connection dialog, and iSync automatically launches. You will see iSync cranking away synchronizing your Palm with iCal, and Address Book, in addition to the HotSync manager status bar.
Tested and works perfectly with a Handspring Treo 90 and a Palm Vx. Appears to also support Sony Clie's and the Visors. Enjoy!

That would be really sweet, I'm holding off buying a Clie pending the release of iSync.
Btw, just to get back on topic, I know that this is very kludgy but can't you export Calenders individually and manually transfer them to your Palm?? You know, all that "open standards" stuff in the iCal documentation?
