I am wondering whether the time has come for buying an all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machine. I would like to see pretty good integration into OS X. What's out there, and what are your experiences?

It looks like the HP OfficeJet d135/145 are pretty decent units. However, I wonder about their compatibility with Mac OS X, Jaguar in particular. Printer drivers are one thing. However, given that, in general, scanning is a real weak point in OS X, I wonder how that works with these units. The <specs list compatibility with OS X 10.1 and above, but can I trust that completely, or will I be disappointed?

DO NOT BUY EPSON!!!!

I bought a Stylus Scan 2500 from Epson about a year ago. The technology was less than one year-old when OSX came out, and they REFUSED to make drivers for it!

To this day, they still refuse! Some guy from another country wrote a hack to make the printer-part to work (I think he faked the OS into thinking it was an Epson 740), but it's not a great solution.

If someone else can throw a half-decent hack together, and Epson still refuses, that just leads me to the conclusion that Epson doesn't care enough about Apple customers.

Someone posted a way to get Jaguar to recognize it (as a printer-only), but many of the advanced features (high-res dithering, etc.) are totally missing, and the color is completely screwed up (red is made brown, violets are all blue).

And I still can't scan without purchasing some other guy's broken-ware (limited number of uses until you have to pay--no I'm not naming names).

I will never buy Epson-ANYTHING anymore and I suggest you all do the same. (Not to mention that their inks are very expensive.)

I was waiting for Jaguar to see if Apple would support it, but now I know that I need to get another printer. So I am also eagerly awaiting others' opinions on your subject--thanks.

I read in MacWorld (http://www.macworld.com/2001/08/feat...yingguide.html) that the HP 3-color ink-jets have a good print quality and don't gouge nearly as much as Epson for their inks. Anyone with experience with the HP all-in-one's?

... Actually, if you read that guy's new SS2500 pages at

http://www.cblue.org/things/ss2500jag.html

http://www.cblue.org/things/ss2500.html

he also says that the new EPSON TWAIN driver works with the Stylus Scan 2500; it's also possible to use CUPS and Gimp-Print in 10.2 instead of his old, hacked driver (why didn't he update it by hacking the newest, Jaguar SC740 driver? That would have provided *all* EPSON's detailed settings). You could try the TWAIN driver (I have, among others, a SS2000, and it doesn't work with it - but it's also a sheetfed scanner, while the SS2500 one should be a "true" EPSON scanner):

BTW, a *new* EPSON multifunction device (the Stylus CX3200, or something similar) is due next month, so it may be worth waiting for shopping (also for the previous posters) - and it *could* even be that the driver for the new device will work with "old" Stylus Scans...

Anyway, the HP OfficeJets (I have an "old" G85) are very good machines; here's a CNET review of the d145:

I own the HP d145 and it is a great printer, copier, fax and scanner. I use both a PC as well as my TiBook 800 running Jaguar. I have had trouble, however, installing the printer driver under OS 10.1. You can print under OS 10.1 but it is rather slow.

I have not had the opportunity to use it under Jaguar. When I do, I will let you know. But for sure, it works extremely well with the PC and pretty well under OS 9.

If I had to choose I would go with that printer. Any irregularities with the printer drivers will be addressed soon enough.

You might want to reconsider buying an aio, I have an hp psc 950, by itself it's a great unit, but alas, no drivers for 10.2, so no printer, fax (this has a built in modem btw), nor scanner. In 10.1.x the drivers finally came and it worked great. For right now, you might want to hold off on an aio and get a regular printer that Apple writes drivers for, it's just too chaotic right now. I am working around the printer by sending the items to another computer running OS9, but that certainly is not ideal.

If it's not a Epson-sanctioned solution, I'm not interested anymore. I've been burned for too long. I want a solution that is sanctioned by Apple AND the printer manufacturer.

Buy another Epson? Are you kidding? So they can stop supporting it when 10.3 comes out? I don't think so! Track record counts.

Thanks for the review! I'll check it out.
