So, for whatever reason, my partition that holds all of my data (music, docs, preferences, even my user directory) is on a separate partition from my X installation.

Well, it was. Something corrupted it, and I eventually had to get all of the data that I could onto my fw hd. I got a good bit of my music, but I am still missing most of my loose, miscellaneous songs from the long lost napster days and the recently lost audiogalaxy days.
However, it is all on my iPod which I had updated only a few days before.

Maybe all I have to do is plug it in and retrieve the songs, but I seem to remember something about not being able to take your iPod to another computer to transfer music.

Is this going to stop me from getting my music back? If that is a problem, is there a solution? What should I do?

I haven't tried it but I found this on version tracker. It seems to do what you want.

Yeah, this happened to me. You're gonna have to find a utility to transfer the songs. You can't just plug in the ipod and get them back. Just click no if it wants you to sync with the new mac which will obviously destroy your collection.

Actually, I found a better program than I did before. This one I actually tried, and the interface is the coolest thing. It is called xPod and it can be found here

Well, it would appear that xPod works quite effectively, but due to user error (i.e. i didn't realize that iTunes would automatically pick up my iPod before xPod would) I have totally lost those songs.

Thanks for the effort y'all. I appreciate it.

If your in 10.2 you don't need any utilities. Just open the find window, check the ipod and search for files containing .mp3

Hope that helps.
