Hi

I am about to buy a new DP 867 in replacement of my Cube. I would like to buy new speakers (not the Apple ones).

I saw some nice speakers from Logitech (Logitech Z-540).

It has a subwoofer and 4 speakers. I am not familiar with the Power Mac G4 sound connectors. So my questions are :

- Are 4 speakers really an advantage or is the Mac just unable to use them
- There is another model, the Z-560 more powerful and THX compatible. Can the Mac handle THX ? Or do i need a special sound card ...

Thank you in advance for your opinions and advice

AFAIK the onboard sound is stereo only. If you want to benefit from 4 speaker youll have to get a sound card.

If you want very good affordable speakers ($30 at office depot w/ a coupon) then the 2.1 logitech z-340s (?) are a sound purchase. If you get them, remove the fabric covers from the satellites.

I've got some ALTEC LANSING ATP3 and they sound great. It's 2 speakers and a subwoofer that sells for $130 CND, so you can get them for about $80. It's worth every penny, after a week, I sold the compact stero I was using to listen CDs while I was working.

Speakers are great, but in a multi-person environment (read I got kids) I find the Sennheiser HDR 80 wireless headphones (there may be newer models now), are great for music. Don't buy the cheaper models, I don't think they have the static suppression of the higher models, and they aren't as comfortable to wear.

I was at CompUSA a couple of days ago and I was listening to all their speakers they had on display. I have to agree that the Altec ATP3 speakers sounded the best to me, in fact I was impressed with the sound quality those little speakers put out. It even sounded better then some of the others that were double the price. I was surprised to find out it cost only $79.99US and I bought two of them.

Hi,

I recommend the Monsoon MM-502 or MM-1000 planars with subwoofer.

Bipole planar satellites that sound very natural. Great for music and gaming.

This from a 10 yr veteran of the snooty high end audio industry.

I pickedup my ATP-3s at Best Buy for $50. Dollar for dollar, they may be the best computer speakers I've heard. They sound every bit as good as the iSticks and cost 1/4-1/3 the price. They are not gaudy looking, have easy, logical controls and have excellent sound.
It I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you.

I have a Boston Accoustics system and wow! My particualr 2.1 set up doesn't have the wall shaking bass that a Klipsch system would have, but for less than $50 they are superb! A very full, satisfying sound in both high, mid and low ranges. Here listen: <turns on favorite bass test> lol.

If you are going to go top of the line, get a Klipsch system. I think their low end is $249 something for a 4.1 system.

Just a fyi, the 4 = four satelitte speakers and one subwoofer which normally only has 10% of full range (the lowest 10%) hence 4.1

Also, if you put your subwoofer in a corner, there is a resonance effect that will boost your bass.

And a few notes about Klipsch systems.

They are the best computer audio I think you can get. My RA (I am a student living in a residence hall) has a 5.2 Klipsch set (5 mid/high range, 2 woofers, don't ask me how) and when he turns it up the entire three story building can feel the base to the bones. Klipsch is one of the few audio companies to make THX certified speaker systems. If you ever get the chance to hear one demo'd you're guarenteed to be amazed. I know I was when Dan (RA) turned his up to show me what it was like. You can turn them way further up(120 db+) than is confortable without the slightest hint of distortion.

However, the quality come at a price; top dollar. And don't even think about getting a set w/out getting a sound card that can give you 5.1 surround sound.

When you consider the price/performance ration, Boston absolutely hammers Klipsch - similar quality, MUCH cheaper.

Similarly priced Boston/Klipsch systems are very comparable, quality wise. I think you'd be impressed with Boston.
