I'm very excited about the new toy I'll have soon and am looking to avoid making any stupid mistakes. Do any current iPod owners have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your helpful thoughts/advice.

Do NOT leave it in your pants when you're doing your wash...
On a slightly more helpful note: do NOT make yourself mental by trying to avoid scratches on the back. It's an impossible task and one that will only detract from your enjoyment of the iPod. It was intended, remember, to listen to, not look at.

1) Don't play Disco on it.
2) Get a case for it.
3) If the battery indicator shows, say, only 3 bars remaining, but you know it should be full, just restart the iPod. To do this, hold the Play and Menu buttons down for a few seconds. It should then display properly.
4) I was serious about the Disco. No, really!
Anyway, the iPod is a great, intuitive device. Just use common sense and don't drop it from high places, dip in in liquid, etc. and you'll be fine.

be aware that if the pod is connected to a pb/ibook and mounted, putting the machine to sleep will make the pod think it can be safely disconnected, though data loss/drive damage can be incured by unplugging it and mounting it on another machine.
what not to do? don't have more than one mac booted from the pod at the same time without having locked the pod drive before booting the first one. and if you do, don't copy files to it/delete files from it. i managed to break my pod, my powermac, my mom's powerbook, one of the new imacs on display, and monish's ibook at mwsf last january doing that
oh, and on a useful note, don't leave it out in the sun/in a car in the sun, don't play disco on it, and when trying to charge itself it drains laptop batteries like mad.

Good point. I also believe that this is true for all Macs, not just the laptops.
