I'm looking for an external firewire drive, at least 40gig. I need one compatible with Jaguar, any suggestions? Please post links if you have them.
Thanks!

About a week ago I got a new 60 GB FireWire hard drive from LaCie. It's the new d2 model, with the brushed aluminum case. So far I like it a lot.
-- It's OS X compatible (including Jaguar). It comes preformatted HFS+ and doesn't need any extra OS X drivers, so you just plug it in and go. (You do need to install drivers to run it under OS 9.)
-- It has a 7200 rpm drive in it, but it's very quiet. No fan, at least that I can hear. The case doesn't get very hot either. I read that the previous-generation LaCie FW HD was quite loud, so that was part of the reason I got the new one (came out this summer).
-- Technical info is somewhat sketchy, but I saw a couple of references on the CDs that came with it that seem to indicate that it uses the Oxford 911 bridge. I'm not sure. But to my untrained eye it seems plenty fast.
-- It comes with a stand where you can have it sit vertically on your desk, a real space saver. Or you can have it horizontal if you prefer.
So far I'm just using it for some backup storage; I haven't tried booting from it or using it with iMovie. But so far I like it.
My local Mac reseller had just the older LaCie drives, so I ordered direct from LaCie over the phone. Very easy to deal with. It was about a 10-day wait, but it was worth it.

I have a Mercury Pro Elite case from OWC, with an IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80 gb in it, and am pretty happy with it so far. http://eshop.macsales.com. It's among the fastest in terms of performance, at least about a year ago.
I have also heard VST drives and Western Digitals are also very good. I would also check and see what Transintl has in stock ( www.transintl.com).
Basically, if you don't need it as a mobile drive, get a fast 7200 RPM drive with an Oxford911 case.

I'll second that post. I've got a Mercury Pro case with a 60 gig IBM drive. Great performance, quite and compact.

Just got the ADS Drive Kit after reading this thread and the linked threads. I have to highly recommend it those who need to house an external DVD/CD/CDR/CDRW or HD.
