I had my HP 4ML printing with no problems in my old set up and OS 10.1 and 10.2 -- then i mucked it up!!!!!
My old setup:
• Apple Mac B/W G3/450
•_HP 4ML (serial)
• Farallon Iprint Adapter (Serial -> Ethernet)
• Ethernet Hub ( Mac -> Hub / Printer -> Hub / Hub -> Modem / Modem -> Wall)
With this setup I was able to see my printer and print to it via AppleTalk -- No problems.
Then I introduced my G3 to my new iMac 17".....
The plan is/was to use the G3 as a Web/Hotline/Storage Server and use the beautiful new iMac as the "everyday" machine.
All i'm really concerned about is printing from the iMac.....
I yanked the hub out and got a 4-port Linksys Router. The Setup was flawless and it all worked great - until i realized that the port the printer was plugged into was dead (no lights). Also, on the Farallon adapter the "link" light was bilnking, indicating that there was no connection.
When i went to the Network SysPref - AppleTalk was active, but no zone was selectable.
Also, no printer was being found in the print center. (no connection, Duh!)
Spoke to Farallon and thay say that the Router probably has a auto-sensing port thingy so the printer connection is not triggering it to think it has a plug inserted.
So no i'm held to task to reintroduce my hub into the network.
Here's how i see how it'll have to be:
Imac -> Hub / Printer -> Hub
Hub -> Router / G3 Server ->Router
Router -> Modem
Modem -> Wall
The Verdict........
It worked with no problems...sort of.
I connected the iMac and the printer to the hub, and then
connected the uplink port on the hub into the router....made
sure the uplink selector was "on" and Voila! Full connection to the
printer.
Connection Registered and Printer Showed up in Print Center.
One Problem.....the hub is a 10-base T Hub and the connection is Dog-slow.
On the router, the connection light os on and blinking, but the "100" light is off -- probably meaning that the router has detected it as a non 100 base-T connection. Chances are i may need a 100 base-T hub for best throughput.
I'll check it out with the Linksys people to make sure i need to ugrade my hub, but the moral to this epic is that i got a laserprinter to print with OS X 10.1/10.2 and that i didn't even update any drivers (i believe that the driver was selectable when I orig configured it)
...just helping the cause....
