Any suggestions welcome.

I have an original 5 gig pod. Plan to get a 20 gig when I get my bonus in November, but I've heard that Christmas is a likely time for a new pod... I realize that rumours are vapor... but still, what do others think?

I heard they're working on a 40 gigger.

I doubt you'll see any sort of "next-generation" iPod for a while. The iPod in its current incarnation is still insanely popular, and the PC version just hit store shelves.
They may add larger capacity hard drives (depending on what Toshiba can manufacture) and other accessories (like the remote), but that's all I foresee for now.

Well, here are the things we can hope for and realistically not expect...
Wireless communication be it bluetooth or 802.11b I don't really care or know what the technical implications are.
Make it a DV and Flashcard storage device. don't make me take my tibook on holiday or spend ages in internet cafes sending pictures home.
Add a ******* firewire to USB converter so that I can plug my soundsticks and iSub in without relaying through my mac.
Extremely unlikely (not to say the above isn't): increase the screen size to 4 inchs diagonal and allow me to backup a DVD onto the hard-drive. With a 20Gb model I could fit a two DVDs on and still have room for almost 5Gb of music!
OK, ok I know the reaction to most of this but judging by other posts, I am not the only dreamer!

One USB port (to connect digital cameras and/or card readers) would be really nice indeed. I'm tired of small memory cards too.

Yeah, a "Don't Steal Movies" sticker would look great next to the "Don't Steal Music" one.
I think the iPod is great because it's a simple, well-designed device that fills a specific need VERY well. I don't need it for anything more than mp3's (though minor additions like Contacts are nice), and I wouldn't want it for anything more. Long live the iPod!

You don't need a USB port, just a Firewire card reader. These have been available for about a year now and a new one was released last week.
All that we need is for Apple to provide the ability for the iPod to recognise the device. Just update the firmware to allow this Apple, and you will sell a heap more iPods and provide immense please to current users.

As I can understand why some people may want a usb port as an option I for one oppose it, iPod is simple and it is simple because of FW. As far as an update, to what exactly, I think it's perfect and am extremely happy with mine, I have never thought to myself, gosh, I wish...... I have a ten GB and it's not even half full and is now synced (bonus features) to my mac (contacts, calendars). 20BG, good lord, 40GB, holy $hit. I will have my iPod for a long time, hopefully if the battery needs replacement it won't be too pricey. Uh, there's something, even longer battery life, there. I don't know about user replaceable batteries, it seems like a pretty sealed system to me, would wonder how a removable battery would affect it, thicker too maybe.
Anyways, I don't think the iPod is ready for any update, 20GB geez.

You'd be surprised! I don't consider myself to be a huge music collector or anything, but I have roughly 8 GB of songs, and know every single one of them by name and artist if they come on. I don't think 20 GB is unreasonably huge, especially for people who use it to backup as well. For backups, an iPod up to 80 GB could be quite useful actually.
