I'm thinking of getting a windows 5 GB iPod for somebody. Has it had any problems I should know about (especially software-wise, which is NetMD's problem)?

The more pressing issue though is the firewire problem...which is the better card for the price? Both of these on Amazon got good reviews...the orangelink firewire card from orange micro, and the adaptec AFW-4300:

$41.00

orange micro orangelink firewire PC card $58

I would like to go for the cheapest possible (stupid PC's, they should have this thing standard), but if anyone would like to advise otherwise, please do so.

thanks.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

You do realize that those are two different cards don't you? (IE: one a PCI card for desktops and the other a PCMCIA card for laptops). Is the system a laptop or a desktop or do you need Firewire for two systems?

As for the prices... ugh. Each is about $20 overpriced- basically you're paying for a 'name brand' on a box and some cheesy software you may not need. (The chipsets in any card you buy, regardless of who's name is on the box, is going to come from the same crop of manufactures).

I'd go for something like this:

$14-$22 is much more reasonable for a Firewire PCI card. Stop thinking 'Mac' prices! It's all the same stuff *without* the magic Apple fairy dust and double price markup.

I have $18 Firewire cards in several PCs I own and they all work flawlessly.

As for iPod and Windows,I don't see where you should have any problems.

Someone at the office just got a 20 gig PC one. He had some problems with the software taking minutes to download one song.

Yeah, I was just doing a quick search on amazon.com, I only need a desktop one.

Thanks for the link on the cheap(er) card....*whew* I typically run down to Fry's to buy stuff, thanks for reminding me to check them and other places first.
