Here's the story from Excite News:

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) said on Monday that display maker ViewSonic Corp. will start selling a new handheld computer featuring the software giant's Pocket PC operating system.

The new personal digital assistant, which costs $299, is the cheapest new PDA running Microsoft software to date, said Ed Suwanjindar, a mobile devices product manager at Microsoft.

Microsoft is trying to move its software away from the desktop and into living rooms and people's pockets to make itself less dependent on sales of personal computers running its Windows operating system.

"The device is one of the thinnest and lightest Pocket PC PDAs out on the market, but still reaches a great price point," said Suwanjindar. It will be available in early November.

ViewSonic, a closely held maker of computer screens and flat-panel displays, said the new PDA would sport Intel Corp.'s (INTC.O) 300MHz X-Scale processor, have 32 megabytes of flash memory, a 64,000-color display and a Secure Digital (SD) slot.

With PocketMac soon to be Jaguar compatible, this could be a neat little PDA. I've been fooling around with an iPaq and I must say, the screen is gorgeous. All I need is a calendar, address book, and notes. Oh, and a few games for when the train is delayed. If Palm would improve their color screens and use a faster processor I'd stay with the V series. I love the size and shape, but the screen just blows. Once you've used a pocket pc, it's tough to go back to Palm's poor graphics. Just looking at subway maps on the Palm vs. iPaq is almost enough to make me toss my Palm in the trash. Only my modest needs keep me using my Vx.

Hey rambo47. Haven't talked to you in months (if not years). Last exchanges were on O'Grady's PowerPage.

It is indeed enticing to think about using a Pocket PC with a Mac. Competition in the PDA market is good, even if it comes from Microsoft.

As for modest needs, why do you think I have stuck with my Palm IIIxe (bought to replace my stolen IIIx when I was still making good money in NYC)? In recent weeks, however, I've been very tempted to buy a Sony Ericsson T68i. It would still serve my modest contact and calendaring needs, but would be more portable than my Palm and provide telephony, voicemail and on-the-road internet access to boot.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.
