We're thinking about getting a network printer but were wondering about how it works if we have a broadband/dsl router that our computers retrieve an IP from automatically. Does the printer also obtain an IP automatically or can you still assign one to it?

I'm looking to do the same thing. From what I understand, both are possible, at least with HP network printers. A ( reasonably modern) network printer can either pull a dynamic IP from your router (via DHCP) or you can assign it an IP address within the subnet that your router assigns IPs from.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

If you are running OS X with rendezvous then you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure you buy a decent printer that has this capability.

rendevous must be built into the printers, too, and most printers (if any) don't have this yet.

you're better off running JAGUAR (10.2) on your Macs and using USB printers--Jaguar has usb printer sharing, and if all your computers are on the same subnet and you have printer sharing turned on, then other Macs can use these shared printers.

Using USB is certainly the cheap way to go but my experiences with USB and device conflicts say otherwise. There is nothing really difficult about setting up a printer on a network. Anybody can do it who has some basic common sense and technical knowledge. If you have a print server (external or internal) and a printer than all you really have to do is load the drivers and the system will basically find the printer after you set up your printer (run PrintCenter). There's not much more than that.

You would just use the printers IP address when adding to the Printe Center. Easily done. All network pronters have an IP. I use a Brother network printer on a setup like yours.

How do I configure this to work? I have done the following:

1) Turned on appleshare on my ibook and G3
2) Turned on "printer sharing" on my g3, which is connected to my Epson 880 printer.

The G3 connected to the printer is connected to a linksys wireless router. The ibook down the hall, the dsl works, but I haven't the faintest clue how to get printer requests from the ibook to reach the epson printer.

I tried adding opening "printer center" on my ibook and add the address of the printer, but it is grayed out.

Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

I'm using fulmer's method and I'm not having any problems.

I'm using an iMac DVSE 400 with an iBook 600, both running Jaguar; my Epson i740 is connected to the iMac. My DSL modem is connected to a Linksys router/WAP with the iBook using Airport to connect to my network.

With Printer Sharing turned on for both Macs, I can print from the iBook as long as the iMac is on, even when it's in sleep mode.

Is there any way to use the 6P with Jaguar (2.3) on a G4 Titanium? I'd like to keep the printer on an SMC router (DSL, airport).

It also seems hopeless to try using the IrDA port, even if I try through classic. Any ideas?
