I want to know if I can finally lay my battered Palm Vx to rest. Are there any success stories out there with T68i (or m) and i Sync?

I have put my visor to rest in favour of my 'new' second hand T68i
Since entourage hot sync [part 1] went wild with all of my info I made a descision to move to something different
... with positives and negatives
the negs
_ bluetooth pairing with my powerbook is not strightforward [it takes a few fiddles and then you may have to 're-pair' after putting the computer to sleep or sometimes if you make a call]
_ phone memory is limited compared to my visor [I think it takes 500 contacts and I have maxed them out + it is awkward to sync selective groups of contacts]
_ isync [or something else] is buggy - contacts sync most of the time but I have yet to get the calendars to work [I get the same "assertion failed ... " etc error mentioned in other threads]
the positives
_ it is much more important for me to have some information on my phone which I carry everywhere as opposed to having everything on my visor which I only carry some places [the T68i has many fields per contact which is great]
_ it is also much more important for me to have more open file formats in address book, ical and mail rather than the convenience of a single app like entourage [before ical came along I couldn't get my poor entourage calendars to be useful in anyother program]
_ the T68i is easily the best phone I have ever used - clear, intuitive, colour and all the right technical specs
_ the bluetooth impelmentation with address book is very well done - it is not at all a gimmick - I can sit and work contiuously while I send and reply to sms messages, dial up, only lifting the phone to my ear to speak - I just need someone to gift me a bluetooth headset and I can leave my phone in my bag all day
potentially
I have closed my eyes and made the leap to .mac
It would be great to have sms integrated and other phone-to-server direct communication
Maybe I will have to get down to Computer Exchange again for an iPhone

When you iSync the T68i, do pictures of contacts in your address book get transfered to the phone?

No.
Calendars from iCal sync to my T68 seamlessly. ToDo's do not. Contacts transfer to my T68 seamlessly. I have the "Main/All" group in my Address Book, and a "Phone" group. All contacts that I want on my phone, I simply put in the "Phone" group, and tell iSync to simply sync my "Phone" group.
I also use a Palm m500, and it syncs perfectly also.
Any changes made on my iBook, my Palm, or my Phone are automatically synched up with the other devices.
I use my phone to check events and contacts. If you need a simple solution to hold events and contacts, get a T68. If you need more, get a Palm.

there is a shareware program that allows you to send pics to your t68i via IR or bluetooth, but if you're talking about the vcard pics i don't think it would do that. you'd have to take each individual pic and send it. they'd have to be sized correctly i think. 100x80 or something.

Bear in mind that if you're in the United States, the GSM coverage is terrible. Here's the US map:

(Click for a bigger version)
The yellow parts have NO coverage. And remember that the T68i cannot fall back to the analog network, which covers pretty much the entire US. Many (though not all) CDMA or PCS phones can use the analog network in a pinch.
I came very close to buying a T68i, but fortunately a friend bought one first. He can't use anywhere except right in the heart of the city. Pretty much nullifies the point of a cell phone if you ask me.

woops, 101x80, youre right!
i live in jersey and the coverage is great for where i go so far. besides, i just sent in my two rebates for the phone today and once i get my checks i'll have paid $50 for the phone itself! that and decent coverage for my area makes it very worth it! oh yeah, i just got my copy of jaguar today too. too bad my d-link bluetooth adapter is backordered though that fun will have to wait i guess.

You can use GSM Remote http://www.traud.de/gsm/remote/ and its "import anything" tool to get photos and I suppose anything else to your phone
10.2 also has a Bluetooth File Exchange application but I not explored it at all

Just use the Bluetooth File exchange that came with the Apple Bluetooth stuff. Simply drag the photos that you want to the app. Be sure you have the phone paired with the mac, and you should be good to go. I transfered my pictures to my T68i that way and it works great.
YOU CAN use pictures with your contacts. I have mine set up so when I get a call from someone in my contacts it shows the person's picture, and it asks me if I want to accept the call from them.

for anyone interested i found a site with a photoshop action / directions for optimizing images for viewing on a t68i. the url is:
http://www.farlowstudios.com/tutorial.html
there are a ton of obnoxious pop-ups but once you get passed them you can download a pdf of the technique. i haven't yet tried it so individual results may vary.

I've just started using iSync between iCal, Address Book and my iPod and I'm very impressed. The next stage is my Palm. How did the Groups on the Mac and the Categories on the Palm interact when you synced your Palm 500 for the first time? Did it create new groups or categories on each device?

There is no correlation between address book groups and Palm categories. All addresses are transferred to the Palm and place in Unfiled. Worse, if you then place them in categories on the Palm and resync iSync sees them as new entries leading to double entries.
I think that the reason for this is that on the Palm an address book entry can be in one Category whereas with the Apple address book an entry can be in multiple groups. This is one area that needs work though. Feedback sent to Apple.
When creating calendar entries on the Palm they are placed into an 'unfiled' calendar in iCal.
There are fewer options for syncing the Palm than either my T68i or iPod. For the latter you can specify which group of contacts to sync, which calendars to sync and, for the T68i, which calendar device created entries should go into.
As I chose to import everything into the Apple address book/iCal and re-initialize my Palm the only real problem I have at the moment are:
1. The lack of any way to categorize address book entries on the Palm without messing the whole setup up.
2. The lack of category/calendar mapping .

Further to this syncing using iSync with Vx, iPod, and Address book in OS X, and then syncing the palm with Outlook on my PC causes interesting results to say the least. On the first Sync I got a load of record duplicates in Outlook and now for some records I seem to get fields duplicated in other fields within a record.
Funnily enough on the Mac and iPod side it seems rock solid with no duplications!
Anyone done extensive tests on this type of setup that can comment further?

I just ordered a T68i as well. $300 on Amazon with a $250 rebate! Yes!
Time to say goodbye to Sprint. I was hoping to get it locally but only CompUSA had them (not even the T-Mobile stores)
