Should I replace my Sawtooth G4's stock DVD-Rom drive with an internal CDRW or keep it in place and add the CDRW as an external firewire device? I don't really watch many DVD's on the computer and I wonder if the CDRW will be faster as internal or external firewire?
Thanks

I added an external FW drive to my G4/400. It's certainly simpler, and you get the added benefit of having two drives, which makes copying discs a lot easier!

I would recommend an external drive, because it is easier to install and you retain the ability to watch DVDs. Although I don't have exact speed test data available, I believe that Firewire is fast enough that it should be fine.

I say buy a firewire CDrw and swap the DVD and CD-RW drive.
Put the CDRW in the mac and the DVD in the firewire box. That way, when you selmly watch DVDs, you can pull out the firewire box. But since you will probably burn 10-20 cds before watching one Dvd you might as well have that capability without the hassle of connecting the firewire.

As long as you put the CD-RW drive in a FireWire case (avoid USB), it will be just as fast as an internal. FireWire has a maximum theoretical speed of 50 MB/s, and the 48x burners only write data at approx. 7 MB/s.
I like Eriamjh's idea as well. Good thinkin'!
