I'd really like to know why the designers/engineers thought it would be a good thing to have the PalmOS devices completely wipe themselves when the battery gets low. Thank heavens my digital camera doesn't do that.
So, speaking of digital cameras, is there a PalmOS device that stores it content on compact flash, SD, stone tablets, ANYTHING that doesn't wipe itself clean at the slightest hint of adversity?
If it all synched back in magically, it would be no big deal, but it's trying to cram in all this old stuff I deleted, gives errors about loosing synch every time, yadda, yadda yadda. I want a handheld that isn't going to suck down an hour of my Friday night again b/c I looked at it funny.
Is it out there?

You could get the Handspring Backup Springboard Module. Then, when the battery is getting low, you can pop it in and do a quick backup before the low battery wipes all your info.
Also, there are a variety of Springboard modules that let you plug in MMC, SmartMedia, MemoryStick, etc. for external storage.

That's all fine and good, but it doesn't save me from the full battery getting knocked loose. Unless I synch the thing religiously, and I know I'm not going to. This thing is here to serve me, not the other way.
I'm looking for a handheld that's not so fragile. It's just unacceptable that these things revert to nothing when the power goes off. I'll be happy to trade in my Handspring for something more robust.
What if your iPod blew away all your songs when the battery got low? Think we'd hear folks complaining about that? I think so.

There's always the newton. It stores it's data on non volatile ram, so you could leave it without power for weeks and it would be ok. Sure, they're old, but they work pretty well.

Newton... there's a thought. But I'll miss my GPS. However, maybe I could then get a standalone GPS and hook it to my powerbook for some maps that can actually be read.... hrrmmmm.

Then again, with the calendar and contact storage ability of an iPod, maybe that's more practical than I considered it to be.... I rarely put contact info into my Handspring to bring back to synch....

All of my Palms have been able to last for a bit on their backup battery. Never lost anything that way ... lost plenty other ways though! That's why I always HotSync everywhere and backup backup copies!
