I was thinking of buying a pocket pc but I have a couple of questions,

-Can I save videos on a pocket pc and watch them?

-Is Pocket pc compatible with OS X?

"Good Palm"? It depends on what you use the sucker for.

First of all, Palm is low end. Its like trying to decide to use a Mac or a Commodore 64.

The Palm is good if all you want is fast access to PIM data (not very rich PIM data, but basic stuff). And that's about it. Maybe as something to play with.

The Pocket PC is much better for rich PIM data, journaling, note taking, videos, music, etc...

Because PocketPC is far far far superior to any <=PalmOS4 device. I will hold back reservations on PalmOS5 until I see it. I am hopeful it is going to be nice though.

I was thinking of getting the Toshiba e310 because it looks like good value.
Any recommendations or thoughts?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes. PocketTV plays back MPEG1 contents. There is also a DivX player to playback DivX (and other) contents. Both are free.

As for syncing with OSX, there is no good solution. The opinion in the PPC world is that PocketMac is overpriced and untested.

OS5 is not worth it, IMHO. It is trying to catch up to where PocketPC was 12-18 months ago with multi-tasking, multi-media playback, etc. (If you don't need any of those stuff e.g. just PIM, then a cheap Palm is your best bet.) Palm devices also lack the CF slot found on many PocketPCs where there is plethora of cheap peripheral devices.

Toshiba e740 is currently the only commercially available PPC with built-in wifi. The e3x0 series is known for its thin-ness (like PalmV).

Currently, the best values are the ones coming out by Viewsonic and Dell. A price war is brewing with these new entrants. As a result, I would recommend buying in another month or so. See http\www.pocketpcthoughts.com for more info.

Any PDA with a brightly lit color screen is goign to be a battery hog - this is a universal problem affecting PPC, Palm, or the Zaurus. Sure, you will charge it more often than a Palm but there is certainly no need to carry it around everywhere.

I travel quite a bit and I had to carry my charger even if I went out of town for just a couple of days. The battery life on iPaq's are horrible, and I had the brightness settings set to medium. Since I switched to a Sony Clie SJ-30 I can go weeks without a charge.
