If you buy a copy of XPlay like I have you can open up the HFS+ formatted iPod just fine under Windows as long as your FireWire card works. Apparently there can be a few problems getting particular FW chipsets working with the iPod on Windows. Many of the TI based FW cards typically sold as "DV" cards won't work properly. If you get a card based on the Via FW chipset you shouldn't have any problems with it. Other than the FW card problems it is only a matter of software. XPlay and Ephpod allow you read the contents of your drive AND manage your songs in the iTunes manner.
