I recently bought an Ikebana DVD+RW/+R drive to read DVD+RW discs I make on my standalone Philips DVD 985 Recorder. The drive loses it's connection with the computer after a while and the only way I can get it recognized is to do a shutdown and startup of the computer. It appears as if the system is querying the drive before it shuts down as I can see the activity light blinking before it loses the connection. Any ideas on this?

This is probably really stupid, but which drive is better? A DVD-RW or a DVD+RW?

I would call the manufacturer about that issue. In my opinion, it will be a while before DVD+ catches up with the reliability of DVD-
Jansar... I would (and did) get a DVD-R (etc). The DVD+... are supposed to seek and write data faster. However they were a day late and a dollar short. DVD-... is already the standard. It may be slower, but it's real advantage is in it's additional ability to write multimedia (that you can watch in a consumer DVD player.
I would bet that pioneer is going to trump it's enemy soon. They have had over a year to do R&D while profitting from their drives. All the while DVD+ was playing catch up (originally was going to be 3GB/disk and had to go back to the drawing table to support 4.7GB not to mention it's late ability to re-write).
Just one man's opinion

Deal, I have contacted the manufacturer as the drive is now dead in the water. It does not even recognize the DVD+RW discs anymore. I am arranging for it to go back for repair or a replacement.

I should point out that some DVD-ROM drives will read +RW, as do some non +RW burners. You don't need a +RW burner to read +RW discs.

Yeah, Eug. My Superdrive reads them sometimes, and sometimes not. That's why I bought this drive - a bad decision. I also tried an Apple DVD-ROM drive in a Firewire enclosure, and it didn't read them. Guess I'm stuck with this drive and have to get it repaired. It is still under warranty.

This compatibility list may be of interest to you.
I'd take it with a grain of salt though, since several of the drives listed may have only borderline compatibility with +RW discs, and it might depend upon whether or not the compatibility bit is set. (I can't really say more than that, since I use a Panasonic setup myself - DVD-RAM/-R.)
