And I bet it'll be more expensive than any PocketPC, too.

Too late for Apple to get into the PDA market, even as much as I'd love to own one. It wouldn't surprise me to see them enter the tablet PC market.

That probably won't happen, either. The more I think about, the tablet market will probably end up being dominated by those so-called "dumb tablets", and I very much doubt Apple will ever adopt THAT approach.

Tablet PC = WebTV ?
The one guy I knew, kinda, bought a WebTV and later replaced it with a cheap PC. He just wanted to be on the internet. People who are going to buy these things, which will probably be over priced for what it can do, aren't really computer savvy, pc or mac.
I don't really need a pda right now, my iPods calendar and contact feature is all I could need right now. Plus, there are lots of choices out there right now too, sure Apple might produce something with the Apple touch, but what are people looking for when they buy a pda. For me I know price would be up there, unless Apple simple designed the best integration and interface for a fair entry level price which had easy of use across both camps, that would for me be a "killer pda".
Designing a pda just for Mac users, of the market that we make up, how many of use would use an Apple branded pda?
I don't think that a pda is high on Apples hit list right now.

It seems like there are always a few rumors circulating about an Apple PDA. They have all turned out to be false so far, so I think an Apple PDA is still very unlikely.

While the prospect is intriguing (I love my Newton) I really don't think Apple will get into the PDA market.
They released the iPod because in the aerna of MP3 players there is no clear winner, no one group dominates the market and it is far from saturated so there is plenty of room for growth. MP3 players are not something you upgrade all the time. Unless you run out of space for your collection there's little reason to buy a new iPod.
In the PDA market however there are two main camps, Palm based devices and PocketPC based devices. Anything else that comes out can ONLY be a niche player and will never be able to drum up third party support to become a large player without buying into or buying out the competition. Not only is it a tough market to break into but it is also easily saturated. Palm's sales are bottoming out because there's little need to buy a new system unless your old one was run over by an ocean liner or something. Eight megabytes of storage space for appointments and contact information is A LOT of space. You can plan the itineraries of your great grandchildren of 8MB of storage space. PocketPC devices have tried to become just what they say, PCs that fit in your pocket. Appeal for such devices is limited as is the practicality. I'm not going to type an essay on a three inch screen using an on-screen keyboard.
Entering a market like that is just a money drain. Had Apple stuck with the Newton the situation would be quite different, they'd probably have a sizable percentage of the PDA market. The Newton and PocketPC devices share the same paradigm, a small handheld computer. Palms are glorified Rolodexes.

I also had the same thoughts back in october of last year with the rummors that Apple would release a MP3 player, but no I couldn't think of getting anything better, so the just need to take what others have done, Color, Huge storeage, tons of compatable apps, media MP3 Movies, a great writing program, long battery life, and a sleak new design, and I would buy it, but it has to be bigger better and cooler then anyother thing on the market before the even attempt for them to sell.

Steve Jobs has already said that the next phase (which we are beginning to see) is cell phones combining with PDAs. It's a pretty well known fact that (1)PDA makers don't know how to make cell phones and (2)Cell phone makers don't know how to make PDAs. Apple, is neither. The most I can see happening is Apple teaming up with a cell phone maker to help design a great cell phone capable of taking advantage of what Apple's doing.

Yes, I do agree with Graymalkin, if Apple had kept the Newton alive and if it moved along with the same types of innovations that the rest of the Mac line had, we would have a completely different story.

The Newt is dead ,EOL according to Apple, but what if the iPod were to sport an interface that would allow one to enter data as well..... Ever think that Steve and Co. had that sort of thing in mind from the beginning of the iPod? Afterall, we know that the handwriting recog. was kept alive.

Um, no. I like the calendar and contact as an extra, don't make it what it's not. That's just me though. Others have mention this as an idea, I oppose it.

I have a tough enough time using T9 predictive typing on my T61 for SMS messages. I would definitely not want to try inputting data into my iPod with five buttons and a jog dial. I see the contact and calandar information on my iPod as a neat bonus. Adding that information through the limited controls of the iPod would be a total PITA. If they added some more neato features to it that'd be cool but I really don't want my iPod trying to act like a full fledged PDA.
