i don't know if this has been answer before. I am about to carry my ipod for a trip. And i heard about the new airport security rules, are they going to affect the ipod? My colleague carried her handspring on the plane recently, and she found out all of her data were gone after the trip? will this happen to my ipod too?

I put mine through the Xray all the time, with no problems. I've never had a problems with Xrays -- I think your colleague is full of BS -- likely her battery died.

Agreed. I am an airline pilot and I go through security every day, and so does my iPod. I've never had a problem.

Nope, I've gone through 50-100 times with a CF card... no problems.

Really the only thing I think they affect is film with a speed over 1000.

They may just ask you to turn it on, that's what they always did with my Palm. I don't know how much of a problem it'll be. Supposedly the X-Ray machines aren't supposed to affect Memory anymore..

That's my understanding anyway.

Why do they ask you to turn it on?
What if I was bringing a broken electronic device on a plane with me, like an iPod i got off ebay that had been dropped? Or a Game Boy with a dead battery pack?

you'd have to make that clear. I think it is so you can't take an iPod case filled with coke or a bomb or something on-board.

If I was a security guard I would be wondering why you were carrying a "dead" piece of equipment rather than just sticking it in your checked baggage...then again, I'm paranoid.

They ask you to turn it on to show it's an actual working device as opposed to a dummy shell that's hiding drugs or bombs. My fear is that our terrorist friends will get smart enough to build a laptop that can still display an image even though most of it is gutted and serving as a little bomb.

Well look on the bright side, the surest way to extinction is to keep sending your children off to kill themselves... So one way or another terrorists lose eventually.
