What is up with Apple never lowering the price of Airport? This is a mature technology that could be standard equipment on all Macs with little cost to Apple. Most of the technology within the Airport is non proprietary, and has come down in price by companies like Linksys and DLink. Yet Apple holds its price at the original introductory level. I like Apple and I have an Airport card in my iBook, but I have to use a Linksys WAP because Apple will not lower its price. This may just be a rant, but this is a clear example of how Apple gets its rep for being over priced.

True, but they do offer two things that many don't: the ability to connect to AOL and a modem for non-broadband users. Two VERY BIG things. The latter is the reason I got my ABS. Now I've got a cable modem, but back then, it was my only option.

It also offers an appletalk bridge. You wont be able to connect to an appletalke network or print to an appletalk printer without one. SMC and a few other companies also make base stations that bridge appletalk though and for 1/2 the price....
There is a thread somewhere in this forum with a link to a chart that compares many routers....

Just got a 4 port wireless router from SMC for $60 after rebate, $40 less than an Airport card! You could buy FIVE of them for the price of a snow basestaion that has only one port, woah!
And the SMC even routes Appletalk and printer sharing works.
Don't know how you could cope with the internet on a slow connection...

AirPort is worth it.
It's stylish.
It has a modem.
It's an AppleTalk bridge.
It has AOL support.
And most important of all...
IT'S EASY TO CONFIGURE!
GOD, i've NEVER seen a device that's so easy to change settings on.

Yes, it works really well, but Apple can easily drop a $100 on the product. I love my Airport and the fact that I can brag how easy it is to my PC friends. I also paid the $299 two years ago, that was fine then, but now, well I've already said it.

I'm sure all those who have already bought Airports (including me) are glad that Apple has not lowered the price.
Wouldn't you like it if your Mac's price stayed at it's original price for longer than it does?

I wonder whether we will be seeing an upgraded Airport very soon. At my university the Airport price has dropped to $225, the Ti800 is now $2599 (including 3 years Applecare). The price drops are very recent, so new updates could be on the way pretty soon.
