I have a 733 MHz G4 Quicksilver running OS X 10.2. I recently switched from a 17" to a 19" Dell/Trinitron flat-screen crt monitor. I had the 17" set at 1024x768, and was hoping to increase the resolution to get more desktop space on the 19".
Well, 1152x870 would be a perfect size, but the only refresh rate in the Displays panel is 75 Hz, which is too low for my eyes. Is there any way I can get it to refresh at 85 Hz?
I know the monitor will handle it, because I have two computers hooked up via a kvm. the 2nd computer is a PC running Win2000, and it goes 1152x870 at 85 Hz with no problem (and this is using the Intel 815 integrated video chipset).
Thanks,
Dave.

The maximum refresh rate is dependant on the video card as well as the monitor.
Have you tried turning off the "show modes recommended by display" option in the Displays Preferences pane?
I am using a LCD screen so cannot check this, but I seem to remember that this allowed me to use a realistic refresh rate on my last CRT.

Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming that the video card in my G4 is vastly superior to the video intregrated into the motherboard of my PC (it's an 810E, not 815 as I stated before).
Yes, I also have the "recommended modes" option turned off. In fact, when that is on, there are only 2 "recommended": 800x600 @56Hz, and 800x600 @60Hz.
Any other suggestions?

Does the Displays pane of the system prefs show your monitor or does it just say VGA?
If it does not know your monitor it will not know the supported resolutions.
I had a Sony 420GS and sometimes OS X would not recognise it. Sorry but I never got to the bottom of this behavior, and so I bought a nice Formac 1740.

No, it didn't automatically come up with a color profile. I downloaded some for the 19" Trinitron from the Sony website, but OS X wouldn't let me add anything to the ColorSync folder. I don't even know if the ColorSync file has anything to do with the screen size or refresh rate....
