I have the 5gb iPod, when I charge/connect it to my fp17 iMac it remains cool, but when connected to my G4 733 it gets very hot.
Has anyone else had this issue or have any ideas? Could the G4 be overcharging?
A side issue is that I try to avoid using the G4 733 for charging (it is at work), as a result my battery life with the iPod seems better (constant 10hours plus).
Any thoughts?

Try this:
When connecting the iPod to either machine, check to see if it is mounting on your desktop.
I found (from Apple support site) that the iPod will get hot because the drive is active when it is mounted on the desktop. Unmount (eject) the iPod by either doing it from iTunes, or option-clicking on the iPod and select eject. It will cool down. At least my 5 gig (original) model does this.
This allows the iPod to charge without being mounted on the desktop. Of course you cannot drag and drop files to the iPod this way, but how often do you do this anyway? I use the iPod to backup a few important files now and then.
Good luck!

Cheers, I'll give that a try. I'm wondering if when it is connected to the G4 733 the drive is not spinning down when not in use, hence it gets hot - unlike when it is plugged into the iMac.
Thanks for the idea.

I have noted this as well. Macpilot is right having the iPod mounted definately makes a difference.
However when my iPod is connected to my iBook, I have noted that is does not get as warm as it does when connected to my PowerMac or my PC at work though I only noticed a few weeks back.
Desktop computers probably do feed more power down the firewire interface. To be honest I don't think it does the iPods any harm I'm sure the designers at Apple have considered this.
I think the main reason for the iPod getting so hot is having the battery in direct contact with the metal casing on the back, and the battery being right next to the drive. The metal casing also helps cooling down as well I guess, within 5 minutes it is usually back down to normal.

I never charge through my G4 i only plug it in when I need to up date stuff, I actually have it charging though my Lacie FW case, it draws power from my G4 but won't mount when my drive is off, so no need for it to over heat and when i want to snyc it up again, i just unplug my ipod turn on my Lacie case and plug ipod in so no need to hastle with cords, and it mounts perfectly
