I have dual LCDs on my MDD G4. I have heard from a couple sources that leaving an LCD on for extended periods can substantially reduce its life span. I know if you leave one active you can get LCD Burn In, but is this what people are talking about? What if I let the computer tell my displays to go black, but the backlight is still on. Is that an issue?

Supposedly, LCDs can be left on bright for extended periods of time. The problem with the ghost image came from the old days when single scan and dual scan machines were all that were available. The new active scan LCDs "tickle" the pixels constantly, thus solving that problem. LCDs will, however, get dimmer with age due to the backlight getting old. I've been told that they're designed for 10 years of healthy use before they burn out. And most LCDs are on laptops, where they only get used heavily about 3-4 years generally.

The reason they dim on the laptops is to save battery life, and on the stand alone units, because of Energy Star standards.
