wow mp4's are great aren't they? but they won't play on an ipod. i ripped a cd last night and then converted all ten mp3s to mp4s, then i put them in separate folders (just cause i like to be thourough) and what a shock the mp4s were half the size! and the same quality! but they woudn't play on my ipod. boo hoo. then i find i can just change the extension from mp4 to .mov. of course the entire process plus that last part is a pain in the bum. my friend says there is or theres gonna be some kind of update for ipod that would allow mp4s to play. any one know about this? also. will itunes ever be able to rip cds directly to mp4?

I think that will depend on whether apple has to pay additional royalties to encode to mp4, and whether it would have to pay per decoder device (the ipod would become a decoder of mp4).

That's because the iPod cannot decode Mp4s yet. Apple doesn't mention them on the supported iPod format page.
It's Apple's call from here. We just have to wait.

I don't think any MP3 player supports MP4/AAC yet. Since MP4 hasn't really caught on as a major format for file distribution (for legal files, of course ), I think companies are waiting to see if it ever becomes a trend.

Quicktime Pro 6 will encode mp4s, and Yes, iTunes will play them.
edit: I just retested and it appears that iTunes WON'T recognize tags .. so , its not FULLY supported by iTunes yet. Maybe iTunes 4 ..
