i recently purchased a firewire (oxford 911 chipset, 120 gb western digital) hard drive. for various reasons, i formatted it as a ufs disk. immediately after formatting, i unmounted and remounted the disk and everything worked fine.

two days later, when i wanted to copy some data onto it and plugged it in, absolutely nothing happened. the disk simply wouldn't show up.

with the disk plugged in, 'disk utility' and 'apple system profiler' will not start up, the spinning beachball appears and the system becomes unusable and requires a hard restart.

the same problems happen when i try using that drive on two different machines (the originally used powerbook and a quicksilver at work). also, a second firewire drive (macos extended, 40gb maxtor) works just fine.

any help would be appreciated. if any unix geeks can tell me how to even see the drive and reformat it in any way, i would be most grateful.

thanks,
ged

Have you tried pulling the drive out of the case and using it on one of the internal busses? Could just be a bad case.
