Hey all,

I have a beautiful CRT monitor (Sony) that has a very thin scratch on it. The result is that when it's on -- especially with a white background -- it creates a prism effect of light, which is REALLY annoying. It's not deep at all -- I'd guess that it might have only penetrated the antiglare coating.

I've talked to Sony and several other places, and no one has been able to help me. I know that some people use stuff like toothpaste as an abrasive, but because the monitor HAS an antiglare coating, I'm concerned about making things worse.

Anyone have any helpful tips?

Thanks a million.

What about fillers? Anyone tried any fillers or anything like that?

I had the same problem with my Applevision 1710 display (trinitron). I actually used an abrasive sponge to clean off some finger marks which was really stupid - it left huge scratches all down the middle. The only thing I could do was scrape off the whole coating.

In your case I dont think there is very much you can do to be honest, I guess you will have to live with it. There may be some kind of filler that might stop the prism effect but it might make the scratch more noticeable.

What was the effect of removing the whole coating?

How about adding an anti-glare filter to the monitor. Maybe it will compensate for the scratch.

Otherwise, You're screwed. You may have to remove the entire coating.
