What are the specifications for a mac printer?
How can I figure out if a printer can be used by the computer I am about to get (iMac 17" G4)? If it is USB compatible can it be used in Jaguar?

look for the logo on the printer box?

I imagine most USB printers you can buy now have snazzy OS X drivers.

Also, check the manufacturer's web site. Some printers might not have shipped with OS X drivers, but have since been updated on the web.

Hi!

I thought I'd add some info in case it helps. Most Epson, HP, Lexmark, and Canon inkjets/multifunctions and a few Samsung laser printers are "compatible" with OS X. What particular brands/models are you considering?

The problem is that some printers work great while others barely function. Typically the problem is with the software and drivers; thankfully, all parties (Apple and manufacturers) have been updating and improving their OS X support (for the most part). Jaguar 10.2.1 now supports many printers already (built-in support and drivers), but some still aren't. A good first place to find OS X compatible hardware is Apple's Products Guide found here:

http://guide.apple.com/

The list they have is not exhaustive, but does include a lot of popular models. As long as the printer states OS X (check to see if it's only for 10.1.2, 10.2.1, Classic, etc.) compatibility and has a USB port the printer should work just fine. Some stores will let you return the product also if you find it's not compatible. And as others have said, check the manufacturers' websites for full specs and email them for confirmation. Also check www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ for recent updates on printer/scanner drivers (just search under the manufacturer's/model's name).

Hope this info helps and enjoy that iMac!
