Well when I first got this machine with 10.2 on it, the P1000 driver (v 2.0.5) was not released so I would print via USB to the P1000 using gimp print. It actually worked decent but then the hp driver was released. Big mistake. I loaded it and it worked for about two days and now the printer no longer prints. I've tried everything and hp is clueless. THey told me to do a clean install so I went through their sequence with no luck. I even ran the disk utility hoping to fix that infamous permission problem but to no avail. So I say to myself, fine, I'll just go back to the gimp print driver, or will I? After configuring gimp print the result is the same. I try to print, it spools about 8% then it seems like all USB communication between the printer and G4 is lost...then it just hangs with "Generic Class: waiting for device" I verifed the functionality of the printer by printing through my windows PC. I just have no idea what to do with this. It seems as though the 2.0.5 driver majorly messed something up. Luckily I can print through cups to my laserjet 4 via ethernet but that doesn't help when I need color. Anybody have any suggestions?

PURE JUNK I TELL YOU!..

Please take a look at my HP 1115 pure junk post.

You can give HPIJS a try too but you will probably have the same results. If you leave your PC on all the time, id hook the PS to the PC and print via Samba... Detailed in my 1115 pure junk post...

Hope it helps.

I hope HP rots in hell for this.

Thanks, I did check that post. Well in short I finally got it working. I guess you can't have a parallel and usb connection simultaneously on the p1000. I had my mac connected via usb and pc thru parallel. HP said this cannot be done and sure enough i reinstalled it with just the mac connection and it worked. But that doesn't account for the HP Communication task that is eating major resources in the top command. Their drivers are just pure junk.

Yeah and the thing is their windows drivers blow just as bad. We refuse to put HP inkjet printers on our network because their drivers always crash the queues. Just bloated POS software from none other than HP. It's ashame because I think their hardware is fairly good but their software leaves much to be desired.

It really is a shame. I like the hardware alot, but the drivers are simply horrible. I have removed all traces of HP from my Mac. It so fast now, feels like a brand new computer. Amazing.

I recomend all you guys with HP printer remove all traces of thier drivers and install HPIJS. These open source drivers are remarkable. They are really fast and stable!
