Apple lists DVR 105 compatibility in the 10.2.2 update, so my guess would be yes it should work, so long as you're using 10.2.2.

Would this work as an external firewire drive?

Yes, it would work as an external Firewire drive. I would suggest using ADS's Firewire case for the installation.

I'm not positive iDVD works with aftermarket Superdrives. I know toast does, but I'm unsure that the powermac picks it up as a "true" superdrive. I know, I know, they are the same drive, but you might want to check this out and be sure before you buy.
I know even OEM superdrives pulled and put in firewire cases don't work in iDVD (still works in toast though....

People have reported that aftermarket drives DO work with iDVD. However, I have not yet seen any posts about the DVR-105 specifically with iDVD. You can be the first. The only question though is if the drive itself will physically fit in the limited space of the new PowerMacs.

iDVD doesn't work with Apple SuperDrives in a Firewire case because it doesn't work ANY external drive, Apple or not.

By the way, the DVR-105 is now available:
