I just purchased an OWC 120 GB Firewire HD. I love it...it is super quiet and FAST. I have a 400 Mhz PCI G4 and for some reason it won't start up off the new HD.

According to Apple with some later model Macs you can hold down the option key while starting up and it will let you choose which Volume to start up with. It does not do this on my model. It gets frustrating when you choose the new disk with Startup Disk Preference Panel and then it reverts back to the old system file.

Am I missing something here or what more can I do to make my new Firewire HD my Startup Disk.

The option-key trick *should* work, but I'm wondering if you have a Yikes! (pci graphics) G4 instead of a Sawtooth (agp graphics) G4. I think the PCI graphics model used a G3 motherboard or chipset, and I'm not 100% sure if those ol' Blue and White models had the option-key trick. I'm 99% sure they did, but I can't remember right now.

You might want to try zapping your PRAM, then go select it from the startup disk control panel, and see if it works.

To do this, hold down command(applekey)-option-P-R all at the same time when the computer first turns on. Keep holding it down, you'll hear your Chime, but then it'll Chime again when the PRAM is cleared.

the B&W's did not have the option-key trick. also, the firewire driver isn't loaded in time to use a firewire drive as a startup disk. sorry!
