I just launched this off to the onlin support channel at Canon:
I have a LiDE20 and I'm running MacOS X 10.2.2. I downloaded the latest drivers from your website and have noticed some odd behavior on my computer. Basicaly, if I do not have the LiDE20 connected to my computer, the file in my hard drive at location "/var/tmp/console.log" gets filled up with lines stating: "Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717". Once I connect the scanner, the console.log file states:
"found my device (vendor = 1193, product = 8717)
Interface found.
Interface class 255, subclass 0
Interface has 3 endpoints."
This is a problem for 2 large reasons. One, since I rarely ever reboot my machine, the console.log file will eventualy fill up my hard drive. Two, my computer is a laptop and this causes the hard drive to never sleep, thus destroying my battery life time.
I understand the nescesity of having the backgroud software constantly checking to see if the scanner is there so it can activate the scanner software when a button is pressed; however, there is absolutely no need to write to the console.log file once every second telling me that the scanner is not attached.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Just checked, and I can confirm this. Except that mine is looking for two products, 8717 and 8718 (which I assume is the LiDE 30).

Well, my E30 has been connected for about 2 weeks now and sleep isn't an issue and just checked my logs and didn't see what was listed above. I would assume right aftyer connecting the scanner, yea it's gonna look for the device. But if nothing of the sort is going on now for me weeks later then what's the issue?

The issue is when it is disconnected. Every second it is dumping that line of text to the 'console.log'. Its not like I can keep the scanner connected to my laptop all the time. Kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop. So, try disconnetcing yours and then view the console.log and see what happens. Also, this only applies if you have installed their software, i.e., the software which checks for activity on the buttons on the front of the scanner. If you have only installed the plug-in, then this probably will not be a problem.
Curing the problem is 'easy', but unacceptable. Basicaly, there are two processes running. Look for something called 'ButtonManager'. There will probably be 2 of them. I already deleted one of them which did not apply to the LiDE20. If you kill these processes, then it will stop plopping the data to the log file; however, the buttons on the scanner will no longer work.
I'm not pissed off or anything, but it is just kind of annoying. I was wondering why for the last two weeks when I was on the road that my iBook was only getting 20 minutes of battery life...

I was wondering why my battery life had fallen recently!
my console log was full of lines of "Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717"
Thanks for the info - I have killed the processes and will now try and stop them ever loading again! I only ever scan into Photoshop so don't use the buttons anyway.

This is great to know considering I just bought a LiDE 30 (heard they are great!)...so thanks for the heads up!
However, if Canon replies to your e-mail, please post it here or keep us updated.
Thanks.

Hi!
Thanks for the info on the LIDE 30. It would be sad if I took my Book with me for a business presentation and found its battery had drained. Do you think Canon will actually fix it soon? Doesn't seem like it would be too hard for them to do...

Based off their past, I seriously doubt this is fixed anytime soon...however, the more complaints the better I suppose.

Exactly. That is why I'm hoping everyone will head over to their site and send an email about this. I imagine it is simply deleting one line of code from the source and recompiling.
If you have killd the processes and/or removed them from the Login Items, you can always restart them if you want. Simply go to "/Library/CFMSupport". In there you will see two apps with "ButtonManager" in their names. I actualy deleted one of them, and I'm left with the N067U. This one seems to work with my LiDE 20, so ymmv with the LiDE 30.

So, before I install anything...if I am going to scan directly into PhotoShop anyway...would I be better off installing the VueScan drivers instead of Canon's own stuff until this is fixed? What do you think?

As I said in another prior post, this only affects the background apps which monitor the front buttons on the scanner. If all you are interested in is the plug-in, then there is (should be) no problem. I just scanned something in using GraphicConverter and had no problems - and I did not have the ButtonManager app running.

Mine doesn't, just make sure you left only one of the background checkers.

I really suggest that if you are having problems, which I imagine everyone does, to go to Canon's site and report the problem. Here are the links which will take you to the appropriate page:
LiDE 20
LiDE 30
They have not got back to me yet, but the more people that spam them, the better. Atleast they'll have more than just my one post.

I disconnected and nothing happneded. So now I'm questioning if I have the same software running. I use the twain to scan in PS but remember downloading the toolbox to get the one touch buttons to work. However, I'm sure I sure I installed it.

Right... thats why I said that if you have only installed the plug-in, then you will not have this problem.
The problem is with the background apps that monitor the buttons on the front of the scanner. So, if your buttons are not activating the scanner software, then you either do not have the background scanner software running, or you did not install the software in the first place.

I'm new to all this. Which plug-in are you talking about? toolbox or scan gear? I've decided not to use the buttons on the scanner, so what do I need to install to avoid the problems with the console.log filling up.
Thanks

Basicaly, there are 2 things you can isntall - each from its own file. There is the CanoScan software, which is basicaly a little app which you can use to configure the scanner buttons and to initiate scanning from. This package was in the file I downlaoded from Canon's website named "CanoScanToolbox4110X.app.sit". This did not include the Photoshop/CanoScan/GraphiConverter plug-in nor does it include the background apps which monitor the buttons on the front of the scanner. The next package installs the Plug-In noted in the last sentance and the offensive backgrouond software tha this whole thread is about. These files were located in the file I donwloaded from Canon's web site named "LiDE20_LiDE30_v7010X.app.sit". If you do not plan on using the buttons, after installing the software from this file: do not restart your computer as the installed suggests, then open your 'System Preferences', click on the 'Login Items' icon, and remove the two items named "N067U_ButtonManager" and "N124U_ButtonManager".
After this, the plug-in should be accesible to what ever application you installed it for. If you do not have an application to scan from, then I suggest using their CanoScan software; however, you have to install it *first*, before you install the Plug-In.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is all this worth it? I hear that the Epson photo 1660 is already OS X native. The epson cost a bit more but I have not heard of any problems. If it is the size and form factor, then the Canon is a good choice. The Epson is larger and requires an AC adapter.
Thanks

Well, I'm not sure what is worth it to you, but I'm still very happy with the scanner. If the scanner is going tom be plugged in the whole time, then you really don't have to worry about this (as long as you get rid of the proper offending background app). And, if I want to use the buttons on the front, I still can. I just have to connect the scanner, then launch the proper background app - and then kill it when I'm done. I'm theorizing that if enough people bitch about this, then they will fix it. It is truly an easy fix - but who knows. But, I love the size and the fact it does not require a power cord. The scans look beautiful and the software works great, except for the above noted problems.

It works perfectly with the buttons and no log ntries.
Install the oolbox, the the driver.
Then go to /Library/CFMSupport
delete N670U_ButtonManager (keep N124U_ButtonManager for the LIDE_30, vice versa).
I also found some prefs and a library for the 670/LIDE 20 family.
Canon's installer is not the best, but everything works perfect.
Good luck

Check System Preferences / Login Items. Removing theo ffending items from the list as required and log out and back in again.
Funny thing is, with the entries, I could not get Vuescan to recognize the scanner. Now it can!

The first time through installation I hadn't yet read this thread, and I wound up using the CanoScan software (which is adequete, but unimpressive).
GraphicConverter didn't see the scanner.
The second time through I was hell-bent on making sure I could do all my scanning through GraphicConverter. This is how I did it:
When running the LiDE20_LiDE30_v7010X installer, a window pops up which shows Installation Locations. Hit the Add button and specify
~/Library/Application Support/GraphicConverter/
and the plug-in will be added to your user directory. (Use /Library/... if you want all your users to see the scanner.)
The next time you start GraphicConverter you'll see an option for the LiDe under the File / Acquire menu, with a short-cut of Command-9.
Share and enjoy.

Just spent time trying to figure out what was causing my console log to fill up - didn't know what that process was, and sure enough there's somebody here providing help.
anyway - for anybody out there who's installed the canon software- this still isn't fixed. unless your scanner is always connected and you actually use the buttons on the scanner - i'd have to recommend deleting the button manager from automatically starting at login.

Thanks for the heads-up about the Canon software.
I just got a Canon LiDE 30 and I didn't install the software, since I prefer to use VueScan, which I already was using with my legacy HP scanner.
Except for the software issue, it's a great little scanner. Only $66 from amazon, and there's a $30 rebate from Canon until sometime in July, so I got a scanner for $36. Can't complain about that.

I have a LiDE 30 but it only runs at USB 1 speed on my USB 2 bus. I am using the USB lead that came with it and the latest drivers from Canon on OS X 10.3.3. The scanner is all alone on the bus and if I connect my card reader instead of the LiDE it works at USB 2.
I though that the scanner was USB 2, am I wrong?
