I have now put my CDs on my laptop so that I could get them onto my 20gb ipod... Now I would love to get the memory back on my laptop but keep all the tunes on my ipod.. Is there a way to keep them on the ipod so I can keep updating it without leaving the whole collection on my G4 hard drive..... Maybe there is a way to lock all the songs I have on the ipod If there is then is there a way to get them from the ipod back onto the G4... A lot to ask I know....

selecting "manually manage songs and playlists" in itunes should take care of that. no syncing will occur when plugging in your ipod (erasing your ipod to match a smaller library in itunes), you manually select the songs to copy.
one post closer to five stars

You have to use a third-party piece of software to get the songs back off the of the ipod if you do this. Search versiontracker.com for ipod and there should be several.

Are you sure about that? I thought that iTunes let you copy music files off of the iPod, as long as you were copying to the same computer you installed from. That would involve some identifying information being embedded in the file on the iPod, of course... I'll have to grab our iPod back from my wife tonight and try this out.

Anyway, another solution to your problem would be to get a CD-R drive and burn all those MP3's to CD-R. I encode at 192K, and can still get eight albums or more onto a single CD-R. In fact, I've started burning mp3's to CD-RW specifically to listen to at work. Whenever I get tired of my current selection, I rewrite the CD with other albums. And I don't have to worry about keeping originals at work that would cost $$$ to replace if they get stolen... (Yay for Fair Use!)

Pretty sure. At least I can't figure out how to do it. I'm interested to hear if you have any success.

I cannot find where it says how to manage songs and play lists, I have even gone along with the Mac help where it says

You can set iTunes to update iPod with only selected playlists when you connect iPod. iTunes erases from iPod songs that aren't in the selected playlists.

To set iTunes to update iPod with selected playlists automatically, connect iPod to your computer and open iTunes. Select iPod in the iTunes source list. Then click the Options button and select "Automatically update selected playlists only."

To transfer playlists manually, click the Options button and select "Manually manage songs and playlists." Now you can drag individual playlists from iTunes to iPod to transfer them.

I cannot find the options, now I'm really confused....

With iTunes launched and your iPod plugged in:

Select the iPod on the left, under the "Source" field.

A new button, which resembles an iPod, will appear at the bottom, right of the iTunes window (to the left of the equalizer button).

Click it, and the iPod preferences window opens with the button to select manually, among other things.

I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

Thanks very much for that... One last thing.. Now that I have checked the manually update, I get the message.. 'Disabling automatic update requires manually unmounting ipod before each disconnect' So what does manually unmounting do, and how do I do it? Thanks again..

Just alt-click on the iPod icon on your desktop and select "eject". The screen on your iPod will change to a checkmark icon and say that it is OK to remove the firewire connection.

Many thanks for that.. I have disconnected with success.. If I could trouble you for one more answer.. If I now took all the MP3's off my laptop HD how would I delete individual songs from the ipod, as I would have none left on my computer to delete... Many thanks

I stand corrected -- I tried this just now and couldn't get iTunes to copy a song from the iPod back to the computer that put it on. I thought it worked before, it must have been fixed in an "update"...
