Don't get me wrong, the 20Gb iPod has changed my life. Seriously. But the incredibly awkward and LONG remote/earbud wires are driving me nuts. They are constantly in a big knot. I just bought the sportsuit convertible case, which has a nice pocket for the wires, but they still tangle in the pocket. What about some retracting spool that keeps the wires neat?? Any suggestions?

Well I don't know about a retracting spool... but Apple should have just shortened the length of the cord between the earphones and the remote! It's long enough for use without the remote and the iPod in your pocket!

They should have shipped a shortened version for use with the remote, and a little extension cord for those not wanting to use the remote.

I've always used a seperate pair of headphones since I got my ipod last year, since I didn't like the pair that came with the iPod. I recently bought a seperate earphone/remote to go with my old iPod, and I tried the earphones that came with that to see if they had changed. I was surprised to see that they apparently used earphones with wires the same length as those that came with the original (non-remote) iPod, meaning that it hangs way out of reach.

Normally when you have a wired remote on something the headphones you plug into them have a short wire, so that the remote will hang at a convenient length in front of you -- why didn't Apple do this? As it is it looks stupid and is incovenient. Needless to say I am still using my seperate headphones.

What are the separate earphones/remote you bought? I may be looking for a better solution...

If you are looking for a better set of headphones, and don't want to use an external headphone amplifier (like a real headphone geek like me does), then the bar-none best headphones for the ipod would be the Etymotic ER-4Ps. They have a short cord, and are canal-phone style. It is similar to an earbud, but it goes in further, more like an earplug, but with a driver in it. You have to wear them pretty deep, and it feels a bit strange at first, but the sound is amazing, some of the best in the world (no kidding, and I've heard some wicked headphones too). They also have close to 30db of isolation too, meaning the loud bus, screaming kids, loud mirror-door powermacs, all of it replaced by utter silence, and then filled with your favorite tunes. The only thing is they are a bit on the pricy side (but you knew that, you bought an ipod!), about 270$, but worth every penny if you love good sound.

There are a few places that carry them, but Headroom is a reputable company, and very friendly and knowledgable.

If that is a little rich for your blood, check out their other offerings, there are some pretty nice sennheiser earbuds in the 20$ range if you are on a budget. http://www.head-fi.org is a good forum for headphones too, you'll find a million good suggestions there.

Peace,
sam
