Hi guys - I bought a USB hard drive enclosure from e-bay (its called a y-251u) god knows who makes it!

I have put the old stock 2.5inch drive from my G3 pismo (I now have a 30gig ibm travelstar in the old pb!) in it, BUT....

I just doesn't work! I can't mount it on my 10.2 system or my housemates 9.1 imac.... any advice?

I was wondering about master/slave issues or something...

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,

OLIx

A 30 gig USB drive seems like a bit of a waste of time. Have you seen how long it takes to transfer files via USB? I have a 32MB USB data key and I never use it becasue it is so damn slow.

Have you considered a firewire enclosure?

Could be a number of things.

Being a usb device on mac os, there are no master-slave issues. That is only regarding internal drives (ide).

usb is plug and play, especially on mac os. Even though its an internal drive, the computer sees it as an external.

You really need to troubleshoot the drive enclosure. Did it come with any manuals? If not, perhaps look on google for it.

Im guessing youve bought a dead enclosure.

Next time, go for a decent brand that is well known and offer support (like sno-line for example).

This site is australian, but sells good enclosures.

Also, usb is a waste of time for a hard disk - you need firewire...

First off, jumper settings do matter using external enclosures. The drive must always be set to master. Even though the USB bridge to the device has no jumper, an internal device used with the bridge must be properly jumpered.

Assuming the HD came straight out of your old PowerBook, it probably was already set to master. Check it out to be certain.

Are you powering the drive via an external powersupply? Many 2.5" drives cannot be powered up direcly via USB.

USB devices use chipsets from different manufactures. Chances may be that you have such an oddball bridge in that case, that the driver isn't available in the MacOS by itself. You might try the various reference drivers for ISD and Shining listed here.

If not, you may have to scour the net for a driver. Maybe do an in depth serach for y-251u or any other identifiers on the case and see if you can find some leads toward Mac support.

The other posters are right- best to stay with a more well known brand of enclosure, because better brands are less likely to be using oddball bridge boards that may not have proper driver support.

I have a A-Tech Subsystems 2.5 inch USB1.1 enclosure, which uses a Cypress SL11RIDE USB to IDE/ATAPI bridge on a PowerBook G3 (Lombard) which works fine with the enclosed driver under Mac OS 9.2.2, but does not work with Mac OS X 10.2.4.

I have contacted A-Tech a few times, but they are located in Taiwan and the communications I am having with them are stilted at best. It seems they think that it should work out of the box. The two driver installations (Cypress USB Storage 1.4J and Cypress USB Storage) I could find do not work in that I cannot get the drive to mount.

The Apple System Profiler recognizes the device as ScanLogic USBIDE
Product ID 2
Vendor ScanLogic USBIDE
Device Speed Full
Power (mA) 500

The USB Prober from the Developers Toolkit yields:
ScanLogic USBIDE@100000 <class IOUSBDevice>
AppleUSBComposite <class AppleUSBComposite>
IOUSBInterface@0 <class IOUSBInterface>
IOUSBMassStorageClass <class IOUSBMassStorageClass>
IOUSBUserClientInit <class IOUSBUserClientInit>
IOUSBUserClientInit <class IOUSBUserClientInit>

In the documentation on the chipset from the Cypress website makes reference to a firmware update that can only be done on a Windows machine.

I was curious if anyone had been able to get one of these enclosures to work or had any suggestions. I am using a the stock 2.5" Fujitsu drive that came with the PowerBook in the enclosure.

Thanks,

BBx
