Hi all, I've got an old Beige G3 that has been upgraded with a 400 Mhz G4. I am wondering if it is possible to fit one of the new DVD burners inside of it and get it to work.

So, I want to know:

1. Can I install a DVD burner in this machine (ie will it physically fit) - I want an internal drive.
2. If I am able to get a copy of iDVD, will it run on a Beige G4?

The machine currently is a G4/400 with 1MB of backside cache running at 200Mhz and 224 MB of RAM.

Thanks for your help.

Hmm. I think you should be able to fit a superdrive in there -- it is the same size as a normal CD-ROM drive. And iDVD would probably work as well, although it would probably be very slow in encoding. I haven't heard specifically of it working in an upgraded beige machine, but many have done it with other machines that didn't originally come with superdrives.

I don't think it will work. I think iDVD requires a "real" G4. Toast should be ok though.

iDVD worked on my G4 upgraded Powerbook G3, until Apple pulled the enabler that allowed it to work with the OWC firewire DVD-R drive. You might want to check xlr8yourmac.com to see if anyone has mentioned this in the cpu upgrade database.
