I have a HD in my tower that I want to move you to a firewire enclosure... My question is do I have to re-format the drive or anything? Because saving the 40 gigs of data on the driving is essential...

No, it will mount as it did internally and be recognized by the same OS (i.e., if you had both OS 9 and OS X drivers when you formatted originally, then both will work externally).

Make sure the jumpers are set to master on the hard drive. External firewire enclosures usually require the drive to be set as master.
