Opinions?

Thanks...it is for my powerbook. I heard that plugging in nice speakers into the headphone jack on the powerbook isn't that good.

Thanks in advance.

Had a pair (the silver ones) and sound was very "tinny". Preferred the Harmon Sound Sticks (USB) even though the size was larger for a more "fuller" sound experience.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1
$149

Apple Pro Speakers & iSub 2000
$139.00

Logitech z-340
$49.00

All better IMO then the Creature.

EDIT: or if you really want to:

Logitech z-680
$399.00

Supports ProLogic II so you can plug in a two channel source (PowerBook) and it will make it a 5.1 source.

I have two sets of [rather rare] Jamo CS-5 speakers. Highly recommended. [no longer manufactured, look on eBay]

Altec Lansing makes some fantastic computer speakers. Look into them.

Otherwise, I say to go with Cambridge SoundWorks' "SoundWorks" ($70) or, even better, "MicroWorks" ($130) systems. I prefer them significantly over the Klipsch and SoundSticks, both of which sound muddy to me (and I've heard this from others). Apple Pro Speakers should be labelled "Apple entry-level speakers" IMHO, and never mind that they won't connect to a PowerBook anyway.

I have my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 hooked up to my new Ti in the headphone jack and believe me, it sounds awesome. It was just as good sounding as my Soundblaster Live 5.1 card on my PC prior to this. I listen to iTunes radio all the time and it sounds great specially on 128k feeds, its just like listening to MP3s. But of course if anyone thinks that hooking up my speakers to the headphone jack isnt safe or good, let me know.

Well, since it's the only audio output you've got (short of buying a USB audio interface), it seems like a good choice!

Good speakers on the headphone jack (which doesn't sound bad, in any case) is still vastly superior to inferior USB speakers.

I think this is more of a peripherals post than a powerbook post. I'm going to move it and leave a link here.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

I have the Cambridge SoundWorks and they sound GREAT. Not to mention they're cheap. Had mine three years now and no problems.

For what it is worth, I love the Creature speakers. I have had them for 3 months now and I feel the sound quality is BETTER than that of the SoundSticks (which I have had in the past.) The bass is quite full, and in my opinion the speakers are not 'tinny' at all. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Sorry...

But so it seems like most people would rather go with the Sound Sticks than the Creatures. I just think that the Creatures looks cool.

I'll look into those Cambridge's though.

Thanks guys.

I've listened to the creatures, the sound sticks, Cambridge soundworks, and a slew of others. I finally found a pair of the new Monsoon Audio PM 9 flat panel speakers with sub at compusa for $100. They look cool, sound great, and have a separate volume control that conveniently fits under the speaker or can be pulled away. Also has a mute button and a bass control for the sub.

I also purchased the iMic and have been impressed with the sound.

Very very happy! Check em' out!
