Hi,

I am planning on switching to a Mac this weekend (iBook) and getting an iPod along with it (prob the refurb). Anyhow, my brother was thinking of getting the Kenwood music keg for his car and I think I have convinced him to go with an iPod (he wants the 20G) and an iRock FM transmitter instead (more versatility). He will be using this on windows (I have to install a firewire for him) and I was wondering if it would be better to get the PC version or the Mac version with Xplay? Any insight might be helpful

thanks,
-m

First let me say up front that I have not used xplay or the windows version of the iPod. With that being said, I would think he should go with the windows version, don't put middle-men in were you don't need them. If down the road he wants to switch to a mac, I believe Apple supply's software to convert the PC iPod to a Mac iPod, but not the other way around, unless that has changed. As for as the iRock is concerned, many have not had good experiences with the product, click this to go to a thread on the iRock and other products . I also don't know if there is software for using a PC iPod on a Mac, but I seem to remember some third party software mentioned in this forum.

Hi!

I was wondering about the whole Mac iPod to Windows iPod issue as well. I checked over at the iPodlounge forums (sorry MacNN!) and found this:

Perhaps you could get the iPod 20 GB Mac and convert it to Windows. Then, after you slowly convert your brother into a Mac fiend, he could easily switch back to the Mac version via Apple's own online suggestions. Should be helpful in getting a new iPod! Good luck!

By the way,

"Miles Davis" - a jazz enthusiast or just a coincidence?

But why? You can use a PC iPod on a Mac and you can convert the FS to HFS+ easily. WIth the PC iPod, you get the 4-6pin converter, musicmatch software and native syncing. I'm not sure what the benefit of getting a mac iPod and converting it would be.
