Anyone know if there is a firewire microphone out there and if it could be used to record directly onto an iPod? As a musician, that would rock.

Not possible, unfortunately. Perhaps Apple will allow recording in later models.

But what's the point? All you do on an iPod is listen to music, not edit and so on.

But it would make sense if you were using it like a handheld recorder or something, like what doctors use.

Well so far, the only easiest way I can think of is to convert the sound file from your Mac to MP3 and drag it to the iPod.

The point is that you could use it for voice memos or recording live music, etc. The ipod is small enough to be pretty handy if it were possible. But it isn't possible with the current hardware and software.

Afraid it's not that simple .

We need to put a DSP + MP3 Encoder + OX911 + CPU/Firmware into the module. It can be done, but it will be in the $200 SRP.

I'd be willing to hand out decent amount of money to be able to do that. It would be great for portable recording for live music. Maybe I'll just break down and buy a PowerBook. <sigh>

couldn't the dsp and encoder duties be handled by the ipod itself?

Although I don't have any real proof, I imagine that the ipod would be capable of recording to mp3 without additional hardware (aside of course from a mic). Or at least it is certainly possible for Apple to come out with an iPod that is capable of recording in the same sized package without a huge jump in price. The question is really if they want to or not.

A simple device that could take a digital input and record to the ipod (using the ipod only as a storage device) would make a really slick way to record live concerts. A sound board patch into this 'device' connected to the ipod, and you walk home with a copy of the concert in your pocket...I would pay....

That requires modification to the iPOD OS so it can accept A/V stream and encode it to MP3, which I am sure we all like to avoid. Also, we still need an external processor to convert and feed the A/V stream to the iPOD.

It's easiest and cheapest way is to encode the MP3 file with an external module, then upload it to the iPOD. It's just too expensive right now to make this unit.

Few MP3 decoder has the ability to encode MP3 as well (Imition/creative are using one in their CD+MP3 hybrid), I am not sure which one iPOD is using.

iPod appears to have only have FireWire and Audio-out port right now (but those funky outer rim on the audio connection might hold some hidden goodies). So the only way to get MP3 in there is to either write it on the iPOD's hard drive, or send in an A/V stream into the iPOD (and iPOD OS need to pick up the encoding work).
