Since a new mac isn't very feasible right now, I'm looking at getting a USB CD-RW drive. Are they fast enough to be worth it? What are the average burn times? I was looking at the Iomega Predator.

You can only burn at 4x speed which is 16 minutes. Audio CD's should only be burnt at 2x which is 32 minutes.

4X is over 20 minutes.

BTW, it's cheaper to buy a generic Firewire enclosure and a standard 32X CD-RW. Should work fine and at full speed.

actually no, usb (usb 1.1) will only burn at 2x not 4x.

even if you buy a usb 2.0 device that could burn at 8/12/14/32 etc.. it will only burn at 2x, its a limitation of usb 1.1

That's not correct. Several drives exist that do 4X. 4X is well within the USB 1.1 spec by the way.

I am speaking in regards of the MacOS, it cannot burn at 4x. and yes the usb 1.1 spec can do 4x barely, however not on MacOS, and since this is a mac forum i assumed he was asking about his mac usb burner and not his pc usb burner

that is not true at all. I have a USB LaCie burner on my imac rev a and burneverything at 4X (data, music, whatever) and never had any problems. Granted its nicer now that I have my superdrive, but if you look around and get the right burner, 4X is completely doable.

My FireWire/USB LaCie can burn data CDs fine at 4X while connected via USB. Have burnt about 4 discs with USB at 4X and they've all been fine.

Technically you are both kind of right. USB max is 3x, but all software lets burn at either 2x or 4x... some software will let you burn at 4x and the burner will take 3x to do it... some software will not... thats the way it is with USB 1.1 on every platform. Do the thruput math if you want.
